I am looking to buy a 22 pistol and was wondering what I should get for around 300-350 bucks. The reason I want a 22 is because we use 22 and shotguns for squirrel and coon hunting. (The 22s get the squirrels/coons moving then the shotguns blow em down). Anyway I kinda wanted a 22 pistol to go with my rifle just to have more ammo and sometimes the coons get in fights with our dogs and we need to take them out and I am the only one without a pistol to do so. Also I wouldn't mind just have a handgun for random shooting of shite when drunk.. I looked at a ruger for 350 today and almost bought it but decided to wait and do a little research. Thanks guys

Obviously glocks are badass but I have a hard time spending 5-6 hundred on a 22 ha

Update: I ended up getting a ruger SR... I absolutely love it. Fires great and I love the look. The guy swore that it fired any type of ammo which is a huge plus.

That and Glock doesnt make a 22lr pistol.

Have to get a glock and then a conversion kit.

I would look at the M&P 22.

The Sig Sauer Mosquito is pretty inexpensive and a very nice shooting 22 semi. I see them all the time for $300 or less.

22/45 or Mark III are probably the best.

That's the other one I looked at... It was a little smaller than the ruger but I loved the way it looked... They were both on sale for 350. My gf's dad has some hookup so I'm probably going to go tomorrow to see his stock haha but I didn't know of there was any difference in the mosquito/ruger other than the appearance

I've never held the Ruger, but I know a lot of guys that like it. I have quite a bit of experience with the Sig and it has never let me down.

Semi-auto. Browning buckmark or ruger mk3
Revolver - ruger single six or for a cheaper heritage rough rider

I agree with the Heritage bbvdd. For a cheap as dirt revolver, they are a great gun. My wife and I each have one with the 6" barrels. They are great fun to shoot and very accurate.

Semi Auto:
Ruger 22/45 lite if wt is important. If not, get a Ruger Mk III, Ruger 22/45 or Browning BuckMark.
Single action revolver: Ruger Single Six or Heritage.
Double action revolver: I like my Taurus, but Ruger makes a nice one, as well.

Am I the only one who thinks Ruger's single six/nine series are overpriced?

Only 22lr handgun? Get a revolver. You can shoot any ammo without worrying about failure to feed. With cheap 22lr ammo, a lot of the semiautos can be finicky.

Want to keep it down under $300, that's easy. Heritage Rough Rider as recommended, or go look for used.

I have an ancient H&R 999 Sportsman, it's a topbreak with a 6 inch barrel. Made in the 20's or 30's, I think. Nice steel gun, not pot metal; and I've fed it everything, including a ton of old ammo that you wouldn't dream of stuffing into a magazine. Cost me about $100.

Thanks for insight! Lot of good info. I'm going to some guys store tomorrow who can hopefully hook me up. I'm going in with an open mind because I'm certainly no gun expert. I've hunted my whole life but couldn't tell you why a super nova shotgun is better than a 887 nitromag... I'm definitely going to use some of the notes from this thread in my discussion though

The reason I would be hesitant towards a revolver is capacity and loading time. Again I'm going to be using it mostly for squirrel and coon hunting so sometimes when a squirrel is in a nest or a fork in the tree the 22s spray the tree/nest to get the squirrel to move.. This is why I was looking for 8-10 round clip and an extra clip so I can have two full clips if necessary

I tend to think the Heritage is overpriced.
