If a dog needs to be shot after taking a fatal hit by car, no problem. Shooting a pet with a tumor that you've owned for 14 years, trashy all day long.

no it's not, it's humane

I think it depends what you shoot the dog with.

Agree. Better than at the vets office. Most dogs don't like to go there. I'd rather my dogs last moments be somewhere that he likes.

I'm glad I'm not a country boy to be able to do shite like this. I've put down 7 dogs and all of them have gone peacefully in my arms with my longtime vet. My dogs loved her though so the vet was never an issue.

years ago my good friend had two worthless arse little rodent type dogs, a lhasa a-hole and a shite-zu, that developed cancer, his nag of a wife was determined to deplete their life savings trying to save these dogs, I had a friend that was a vet at LSU, so I got him to see the dogs a couple of times to save him some $, after a couple of visits/batteries of tests the doc gave the prognosis, my friend asked what would be the best course of action, my friend the vet puts his hand to his head like he's holding a gun and pulls the trigger

The vet was referencing the nag wife, right?

Man, Some of y'all are a bunch of assholes. My friend called me at like 11 o'clock on Christmas night to come shoot his dog. And I liked the dog a lot to. He's just had his first kid and didn't think he needed to spend the money to have a vet open up on Christmas night. Yeah she was chewing on her bone, she also had just bled all over the fricking kitchen. And it doesn't really matter if she could have made it through the night cause my friend had decided it was time.

You sound like a good friend. I've had friends put a couple of my pets down.

So you're good with letting it suffer in pain for hours
14 year old dog with a tumor. It didn't get to this emergency stage in 1 day. The vet should have been called much sooner.

But damn, have you ever killed someone else's dog for them? Namely your friends dog?

Yes i have done 5 times for various friends. I have one buddy that has done it for me twice. First time was kinda weird.

shite happens.

OP did a good thing. It's humane, it's cheap, it's quick, you don't have to put a bloody dog in your car, you don't have to drag it into the vets office because it doesn't want to be there, etc.

Whether you do it or the vet does it, you pulled the trigger. You decided the dog was being put down. Having the vet push the plunger doesn't insulate you from that.

Maybe so, but honestly I think it was more humane in the end. She died at home and not in a confusing place on a table. And she didn't suffer from the death at all, it was instant.

Yeah I think this is one of those things you just keep to those involved and move on. Not sure I get the need to let everyone know.

Poors?

Vets DO make house calls. I also have one who married a niece.

Another option is folks in the extended family and friend circle who can administer the coup de grace via syringe.

A gun can miss/near miss and it can be messy.

My BIL asked me to shoot his suffering dog

I was going to get the pistol and he said "never mind, your sister would find out and be mortified that I asked you to do that"

He took the dog to the vet
