Oil Change places say every 3000 miles. Is that accurate?

No car savvy; flame away
It just seems like it's a way to get you in shorter intervals than you actually need. Am I wrong, is 3000 proper? Or could we actually go every 5000 to 7500?? I'm talking about the average car, not some high performance machine.

What make, model and engine of car/truck and what type of driving? Simple answer is go about 80% of the onboard oil life calculator of most newer vehicles.

You can get away with 5,000 miles but my car starts to get a little sluggish after going that long.

I do every 6000 with synthetic oil

Read your owners manual.
One if my vehicles is 7,500 and another is 6,000. 3,000 mile oil changes are antiquated.

I've been doing all 4 of our vehicles at 5 for a long time now and no problems. One has over 100K.

Whatever my owners manual says is what I do.

This.
In all likelihood, 3K is overkill.

3,000 is outdated as frick, even though that's still what "they recommend". Pretty much most vehicles made after like 2000 can go 5,000 on the reg.

Every 2k miles at least and always get the air filter, wipers and fuel treatment too.

If your vehicle is newer than 2009 and not a taxicab or a LTL Delivery vehicle you are changing synthetic oil too often.

I never believed the 3000 mile oil change BS. I've got an old Land Cruiser that I change the oil on every 10,000 miles. I've put over 500,000 miles on that thing with zero issues.
For a diesel, I'd follow what they recommend.

Every 3000 is over servicing which is great for lube places and bad for your wallet.
I go every 5,000 with most of my vehicles.
Some synthetic oils can go longer but people forget to check the oil level regularly and you can get to a state of being low on oil through normal consumption.
Summary: Go 5k between changes and check your oil level periodically.

1996 Consumer Reports article on a two year study of NYC taxicabs started it all:
LINK
tl;dr: Every 7500 miles, no advantage to synthetics.

I do every 15k miles now. Synthetic, though - and I drive a good bit.

As I was not present with you at the time you had your oil changed, I couldn't tell you if they said it or not.
But I'll take your word for it.

Most vehicles have an oil meter. When mine gets to 5%, I make an appointment. It's usually around 5-6k miles.
