I used to hunt Big Branch and Goose Point back in 98&99. walking that marsh was hard. I'm too old for Venice. But if i got an invite I would give it my best effort

I have radar and am set up down there and I am home right now. I can run in the fog with radar but I avoid it if possible. As I said earlier unfortunately we are so for an accident with everyone running a Lin on a GPS in the river without radar. Not a safe idea. Good luck guys and be safe.

PS there are no ducks down there anymore they have all left. I wish we had the ducks and pressure of 15 years ago

TunaTime, what part of "public" area is so hard to comprehend? You would have really hated the good old days in Yellow Cotton Bay when you could walk from boat to boat.

Venice is not a place novices can roll up in and drop a few dekes in the first body of water they see. The tides and constantly moving sandbars alone will discourage many. This ain't Delacroix. I've fished down there since the 1980's and am a pretty decent duck hunter, and I wouldn't even attempt a duck hunt without someone along that has experience. I can contribute the nearly being swamped, socked in by the fog expertise.

Guys I somewhat agree with Tuna time about mentioning spots on the net. I have been actively involved with Internet forums since about 97 starting with SPAV. Ms ducks is another. Over the years I have seen many many great spots ruined by sharing them on the Internet. It happens most just don't comprehend how many people read this stuff and how many people will take a spot they read about.

Yes Venice can have it all however it can't hold all duck hunters. This year my favorite spot to hunt has had a line waiting for people to finish so they could come take your spot. That kind of pressure ruins duck hunting. The pressure has changed the ducks down there they don't act the way they did 15-20 years ago. They can't just rest there are constantly people shooting them and running them up with mud motors. I don't have the answers but pressure is an issue. Not saying birds can't be killed but the pressure on them has increased tenfold. I don't see it getting any better.

My friend works for an oilfield service company and runs out of venice a good bit. He told me that a lot of work boats run lines on gps now. I had no idea. Definitely not safe.

For everyone Not familiar with venice and planning a hunt down there, venice is the most dangerous with fog in late december thru feb/March. Just keep that in mind if it warms up and the wind starts blowing out of the south.

I find the ducks down there land in the middle of the pond or out in the bay (sometimes in the river and passes too) when they get pressured too much.

Venice definitely has more pressure than ever now. When you can count 30+ boats ( some boats with 5+ hunters in it) in one pass, it's definitely too much pressure. Opening weekends down there are ridiculous now. At least it clears out some as the season goes on.

I absolutely agree with TunaTime. I've personally witness many public areas get overrun with people due to internet reports. I even mentioned it on here about a certain fishing spot near BR. People keep it quiet or you will be bitching about too many people in your spots next few years.

We packed it up this morning heading home. Fog not worth the hassle.

Not sure who Matt is, but I do know I've never acted like the land was mine. I've also never claimed a pond or gotten mad when someone beats me to a spot. Just because it's public land doesn't mean that you should tell everyone about it. Hopefully you agree with me about that, if not, you're not a very intelligent person.

Shooter, don't you have more important things to worry about, like complaining about a failed tuna trip with the fish commander?

You think 1 thread on the OB is "telling everyone about it" ? It's no secret to anyone that Venice and some of these other areas hold birds. If you want to brave new territory and work hard for your birds, then I'll gladly let you hunt beside me. It still takes plenty of effort to do these things, so people reading about it does not mean people hunting it. We're all into this because it's something we enjoy. The state has PLENTY to offer, just be safe and mind your own business.

Well thanks for letting me hunt beside you, it's a real honor. And yes I know how much effort it takes, I've been huntin the area for years. If everyone would mind their own business, then this thread would have never been started.

It's takes the same effort all over the state. Don't kid yourself

ETA: I also agree about giving too much info regarding certain spots, but we're talking serious real estate here, so nobody should feel threatened.

I rarely hunt venice but more and more people ask me about it than in the years past. Don't think the fog scares everyone away. These idiots will hunt in anything.

Ducks Unlimited

Guess everyone needs to pull off their stickers and boycott DU since they are spreading info about PAL.

I enjoy reading all the reports but you won't catch me running the Mississippi River in the dark/fog in a 16-18' boat with a surface drive to go shoot ducks.

They have "other WMAs" where the fog is bad, debris in the water is bad, but atleast the main cut is straight and the big boat traffic isn't as bad. It's still not worth dying over a duck.

Yea I think boycotting ducks unlimited would be a very reasonable thing to do.

Anyone who has ever spent much time duck hunting knows venice holds birds.
They also know it can be dangerous and choose not to hunt there.

Venice is no secret and some of you are straight up bitches

First, boycotting DU was sarcasm on my part, they do more to improve duck hunting in the Mississippi Flyway than any other organization.

Second, I'd rather hunt the marsh than a rice field, but I'd much rather hunt somewhere along the River bottom in the flooded timber. If you want to go and play in the 4' swells next to your buddies in a cargo ship in a surface drive not being able to see the front of your boat for 15 miles I have nothing but respect for you. Guess you won't have to worry about one less "bitch" stealing your spot. I'll just wake my arse up at 2AM drive 2 hours and take my 15 mile boat ride out the calumet cut and hang out with with 600 of my buddies
