After what I saw at 4pm mass today, I feel compelled to call out a select few of my fellow Catholics for what I consider the ultimate in being inconsiderate and hypocritical. I got to church at 3:10 and it was already about 80% full. People were scrambling for places to sit.

I noticed a very long pew with a young girl stationed at each end and nobody in between. I thought nothing of it and started to enter the pew. They announced to me that the entire pew was reserved. Didn't want to cause a stink right there in church, but the very idea that some people think that's ok - especially considering the circumstances - is very disappointing. They continued to turn away well-intentioned people until "their people" arrived about 5 minutes before Mass started. There were other similar instances today, but this by far was the most egregious.

Back in the day, it was common decency that said if you wanted to sit together, you arrived together. You reserved your seat by putting your buttocks on it - period. To project your inability to arrive at church on time onto fellow church goers is uber-arrogant, inconsiderate, selfish and reeks of an elitist mindset, even amongst Catholics.

Tell me - what gives these people the right to reserve large stretches of pews? Is 1 entire pew ok? 2 pews? 3 pews? Can anything possibly justify it? It's not the neutral ground at Mardi Gras, for Christ's sake!!

As a catholic, I think it has to do with certain (old white) people's sense of entitlement when it comes to Xmas mass. They think "oh, well I'm here every Sunday so I have earned the right to save seats. Let these once-a-year heathens stand". It's fricked up, but I've seen my own family do it.

Thank the Lord I'm not catholic. This is the crap I hear about each year from my catholic friends. Disputable and flies in the face of Christs teaching.

I grew up in a small church parish where everyone kinda knew which pews families would sit in all the time. Kinda an unofficial assigned seats lol. We always had the small pew in the front left corner right in front the choir.

But when Xmas or easter would roll around you would get the part/time church folks would come in and sit wherever they want. And then family "x" would walk in and see another "new looking lol" family in their pews

We did exactly what you complained about. Only the second time we have been to Church this year too.

That's what they count on.

Next time, bring an old person with you. They don't care and are perfectly happy to be loud and vocal.

I would have pushed past her and sat my arse down. What's she gonna do? Call the bouncer?

ETA: Next time, wear sunglasses and carry a cane.

Precisely my point. Not very Christ-like. But I don't think it's a Catholic thing. It's a reflection of the continuing decline in morals and personal accountability of society in general.

I thought you had to buy tickets to a catholic church and pay more for the good seats?

I guess it all depends if you related to the priest like I am. Then the reserve pew was perfect.
