I carry because of packs of feral dogs. They can be of a nasty disposition sometimes. I especially carry during smokepole season. Illegal? Probably. But I don't care.

I carry a sidearm ever sense we started seeing black bears on our property. I know they are not known for being aggressive, but coming out at night, I still can't help but think they are out there.
Edit: I also shoot a TC Encore, so I don't feel comfortable with a one-shooter at night.

No matter what you're hunting with, if the deer ain't dead, you put another round right where the first one should have been. Arrow, bullet, shotgun, doesn't matter... Put the damned thing down if you're gonna kill it.

I do too, usually with only 3 or 4 boolits,,,, guess I'll add an extry this morning.
My fingers are old & stiff, right up until it's time to reload my encore, then they're a blur! Barney would be proud..

If a deer has to be finished off when you get close, what is the plan?
No. If he/she is still able to move and is possibly going to get away I'll just shoot with whatever I used the first time. If the deer is just flopping and bellowing on the ground I'll just walk over and stab it in the lungs with my pocket knife, maybe giving it a little wiggle while it's in there.
Before someone says that's cruel and the deer suffer, do you shoot your fish before you throw them in the ice chest to become hypothermic and suffocate?

No I use what I got. Can't shoot my pistols worth a flip and would hate not not get it done with the follow up . If I am tracking a hog my go to is my benelli with 00 buckshot. Wouldn't trust any thing else

I hope I have another one to post after this weekend since y'all are tired of this one.

I always assumed that picture was just a finish shot. Was that 10mm all you used or did you knock her down with something else first?

You know what assuming does right?
220 grain buffalo bore hard cast to the neck at 20 yards is the only "finish" shot you need.

I don't like to carry much on me at all when hunting.
Rifle, bullets, flashlight, knife.....
If it ain't totally necessary I probably don't have it, so I don't need two guns on me.
I had to walk up and finish off my deer Saturday, the 270 can hit him behind the shoulder and not damage good meat from mere steps away.
As far as bear or pig defense, I would feel much better using my rifle, close range be damned.

I don't hunt, but I've always heard this from my friends who do. Where does this myth come from?

Probably hearing that from people that hunt WMAs if I had to guess, but all that is a mute point if you have your CCL.

Fwiw many states do not allow a side arm outside of rifle season. States are increasingly allowing it if you have a ccl.
I carry one of my .40 or .45 s on every hunt. Only 4 shots in my rifle and a scoped rifle is not the best option for close range shooting. Hogs, dogs, wounded animals, trespassers.
