Why is "master" not a title. This has always annoyed me. If by earning a doctorate you get the title Doctor, someone who earns a masters degree should get the title "master".

Mr. Wallace. He is the father of our good friend who is 45. He is 71. He claims that I make the best Shrimp & Grits that he has ever had in his travels as does his son. I have them over twice a year for a Louisiana/Lowcountry Carolina hybrid feast and he does not like being addressed as Judge by anyone other than his former colleagues. But he is a very modest man. I think addressing anyone older than myself who lived a respectful life and had a respectful career with Mr. is most appropriate.

Ridiculous.

I've told my wife, if she wants me to call her Doctor, she'll have to call me Master

Call him/her whatever you like. They are retired so they are no longer a judge.

"Judge___" in conversation
"Honorable ___" in writing

"pompous a-hole" when talking about him.

Always judge unless you're buddies, then you never called him judge.

President, Governor, Senator, Congressman, Judge, Sheriff, Colonel, General, etc. they all get to keep the title for life, anybody that says otherwise is just jealous.
