In the past week I've read several articles from liberal columnists regarding falling oil prices. There seems to be a recurrent theme. Here is the short version:

Due to lower gas prices consumers have more money in their wallets. Predictably, this means they are spending more money on consumer goods and services.

One problem... consumers are too friggin' stupid to know the best use of their money. Therefore, this is a perfect opportunity to raise taxes. Instead of golf clubs or a new purse the money could be used to repair bridges, highways, public schools, etc. And we could plow a lot of it into alternative energy programs.

When gas prices go back up we can get rid of the tax increases. The extra revenue collected in the interim will be safely in federal coffers to fund much needed projects.

Thoughts?

These are real articles proposing real policy. I'm interested to know what our liberals friends here think of the idea.

BTW, they differ on the type of tax. Some suggested were gas tax, income tax, carbon tax. They don't really care. The tax payer won't feel the pinch because the money is basically a windfall from the gas price drop.

Barry, is that you? Haven't you dumped enough of our tax dollars into "green" energy that has been wasted?

Raise the taxes on the 1% and pump those funds into health care.

But the 1% are not the people increasing their spending due to low gas prices. They don't care about gas prices.

Once the feds put a tax in place it is not going away. And the money generated will be wasted.

Zach. You know the answer. Heck, they want to raise taxes no matter what is going on with the economy.

If they could get away with it, they would tax 100% over 50k and all corporate profits.

We need a 1 dollar a gallon gas tax. We can't let prices get too low and people start driving cars that are way bigger than they need. We have to keep our ecosystem and environmental balance in mind to combat climate change.

1 dollar a gallon gas tax
Mandate 35 mpg average on all new manufactured vehicles
Give incentives to trade old cars in.
Subsidize car loans with low interest rates through a govt program to help the poor afford new cars...hybrid or electric only.
Make illegal to drive a car getting less than 20 mpg. 200 dollar fine each time caught

In today's age there is no reason to drive a huge truck. It just screams insecurity. A small car is more than enough...all other developed countries get by with them.

I mean, it's been time for a carbon tax for years now, so sure. Either fee-and-dividend it or cut the income tax a proportionate amount.

What if climate change is a hoax? Should we base policy on a lie?

1. Why?
2. It's not a carbon tax. It's carbon dioxide. You are exhaling it right now. Please send me a check.
