Brian Thompson had a criminal record spanning more than two decades, but that didn’t stop him from getting an office job at the Department of Housing and Urban Development earning nearly $90,000 per year.
quote:

He resigned on Nov. 20, which was nearly two months after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in federal court in Washington. The U.S. attorney, Ron Machen, issued a press release at the time calling Thompson “a crooked HUD employee” who “diverted the proceeds of real estate sales from the U.S. Treasury to his own pockets through lies and trickery.”
quote:

The defendant held almost complete discretion,” assistant U.S. Attorney Virginia Cheatham wrote in a court filing, describing a job in which neither his supervisor nor escrow agents questioned Thompson or asked for backup documents.
Isolated incident or further proof the government is inept?

It sure seems like those employed by HUD are nothing but major fck ups. There must be 10 stories a year of one of their employees getting caught stealing money.
I wouldn't mind if the whole agency were just scrapped

Reminds me of the EPA exec who had his bosses convinced he had no time to come to work because he was an undercover CIA agent. Nobody wanted to "blow his cover" because the work he was doing was so important to the country. He took the taxpayers for about a million.

The government isn't a private business.

when was the last time a major corporation hired a convicted felon and gave him access to money. Then let him stay employed 2 months AFTER he plead guilty.

Probably both.

I doubt HUD has tons of employees skimming proceeds. So the incident itself is likely isolated.

But the lack of internal controls in both hiring him (it's one thing to have a college-age drug bust charge, but numerous financial-related charges should have barred him) and not supervising his handling of sale proceeds (that's just plain bad mismanagement there) shows ineptness. Something Gov (all levels) does frequently.
