Well if we're turning Bond black, let's turn Shaft white. One of these transformations would cause an uproar. Care to take a stab at which one it is? I mean, all of these racist guilt feeling people should grow a pair. Bond is white. Period. Now frick off.

I don't think black people care about shaft as much as you think they do

I want bond to stay white mainly because I think Michael Fassbender could be the best Bond in decades.

This is the image of James Bond as decided by Ian Fleming himself. The man is white and always should be IMO.

That being said...Rush sucks.

Shaft is apparently this huge trump card in this conversation. "LET'S JUST TURN SHAFT WHITE AND SEE HOW THEY LIKE IT!!!" It's an awful comparison. Race has a role in telling Shaft's story. Making him white would change plenty more than the color of his skin.

That's not the case for 007. In fact, nothing else would change outside of the color of his skin.

Second, let's pretend for a second that black people aren't severely underrepresented in film and television. Let's say you recast the Beverly Hills Cop franchise with a white actor. Do you think black people would go crazy over it? I certainly don't.

Or how about another franchise based on literature. If Blade was recast and was white, do you think black people would make a huge deal of it? Because again, I don't.

They actually did want to cast a white actor for Beverly Hills Cop. Stallone I think.

It went to Mickey Rourke first. That's not the point.

I definitely disagree. If they turned a black character white in a show where that character was historically black or in a remake, it would definitely be made into a big deal and many would decry the decision.

Anyone saying otherwise is clearly being dishonest.

Plus it's hilarious because id be willing to bet that most black people don't even know who Shaft is

It be one thing if they were changing him to a black guy as a lame political statement. But Idris is an awesome actor, everyone loves that dude. If he's the best for for the role other then why wouldn't a fan of the series be hyped for him?

Be swave, be British (or Scottish or whatever) be handsome, bone chicks and kick arse. That's 007s job. And Idris could certainly do those things

Did I say riots in the street?

People would be pissed though and it would make the news.

Do you honestly think that it wouldn't be a big deal?

You think having Zac Efron playing Blade in a reboot is going to be made into how big of a deal? I think it's an afterthought. You'll have a very small group of white people (who will be painted as the liberal majority, I'm sure) that will fight on behalf of black people, as they always do. Other than that, everyone goes about their business.

I don't think Blade is on par with the Bond series, but in a society where complaints are already made about the lack of blacks present in Hollywood, any change would result in anger, especially if it is a major motion picture.

You're confusing people working in entertainment with society.

It's not. I just couldn't think of another franchise based on a book featuring an African American lead.

Also, the complains are legitimate. Black people are underrepresented. Even then, outside of the few white people championing the cause on behalf of black people, I don't think anyone would really care. I'm not being dishonest. I truly believe that.

I agree with this and said it earlier. It makes absolute sense. The essence of the Shaft character requires him to be black.

As far as Bond is concerned, the modern day Bonds are working for the modern day British intelligence service. The character, while maintaining the Bond "cool" and ruthlessness, has been updated in a lot of ways. Here's a shocker, the MI6 (and MI5 for that matter) employ black agents.
