That being said, my favorite book character of all time comes from the series... I also have 2, actually 3, WoT tattoos
what tattoos do you have?
I read WoT. Like others have said, the third quarter of books makes you want to stop. I would definitely read synopsis' of those if possible. It's like a bunch of women sitting around gossiping about each other with very little action. I loved these books and read them all before getting into Game of Thrones. I think the new author crammed too much in the last book and could have done another few hundred pages to satisfy me better.
The Malazan books are something I'd like to get back into. I think I stopped midway through the 5th or 6th book. the first 3 or 4 were amazing but I got pissed off for some reason and haven't picked it back up. it's been 3 years now.
I'm halfway through the first dark tower book and it's been pretty interesting. will probably finish it in the next few weeks when I have time.

Can you enjoy Dark Tower if you haven't read any of King's other books? Or is there a list of recommended books to read first that would allow you to fully appreciate Dark Tower?
I've never read a single Stephen King horror. I hate horror. I have seen some of the movies/miniseries based on his books, namely The Stand. I was therefore somewhat aware of the references being made, but the books certainly hold up without that. I was clueless about the vampires from some Salem something book her wrote. It did not take anything away from the book for me.

The Dune series in my opinion is the GOAT...you need to read it all the way through.
I've read the first 3 or 4 Dune books. They were enjoyable, and I don't like sci-fi outside of Star Wars (for which I only read for the fantasy aspect - Jedi and the Force). Hits a lot of fantasy sweet spots as someone else said. Not my favorite series but worth a read.

I don't mean to thread jack but I also don't wish to clutter the tv/movie board with book questions:
That being said I've read cornwell's series.. Is there any other great historical fiction series out there? Any period is fine.. As long as there are wonderfully written battle and tension.
Again sorry to go off topic

Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire would be one for sure. I've read one or two of Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series and they were solid as well, though not sure how much they would hit your battle needs.

but some people suggested reading The Stand before book 3 or 4 (can't remember) so that you know more about Randall Flagg.
Honestly you might be better off just not having read the other books when you read the Dark Tower. Most of the tie ins served to do nothing but piss me off and detract from the story.

Thread bump and update:
Okay, finally got the first three WoT. The other day when I made this thread they didn't have it at B&N but today they did and with the help of the $30 gift card my friend have me I was able to get it plus the first book in the Sigma Force series by James Rollins called Sandstorm. I grabbed Sandstorm because after reading The Blood Gospel (I recommend if you like Indiana Jones style of adventure and Vampires. And don't worry it's not silly vampires, more like religious history is controlled by vampires.) I found his style and pacing of writing hard to put down. The Blood Gospel is about 700 pages and I blew through it in about three days.
Anyways happy new year reading to one and all. I've set my Goodreads goal at 26 books and plan on surpassing that. I have the first four Dune books, all of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, WoT and some George Smiley books to help me at least get somewhat there. Everyone be sure to update us all on your book progress throughout the year.

I will always recommend Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series
Is the main character's name Utrecht (Utred? or something similar)? If so I read the first book years ago in law school, got too busy to start the second, and now I can never remember the series or author whenever I'm buying new books. I'd love to finish the series, but it's been so long I think I would have to reread the first book

Brent Weeks Night Angel trilogy
I feel like this series doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves

That's because it doesn't. It does have a lot of hiccups. It's Weeks' first series after all. But the characters are intriguing, built upon, developed, and grow. The plot is fast paced, intricate, and well thought out. It is a story that could easily be made into a series of ridiculously fun movies.

I could probably easily be stretched a bit in to a TV series.
I also think it would make an incredible 3rd Person Action video game
