Why is smoking still prevalent in the lower socio-economic classes?

Decades ago, everybody smoked. Rich, poor, educated, blue collar. As the dangers of smoking became better known, and society started to reject it, it was the more affluent and educated to started the trend. It eventually crept its way down through the socioeconomic hierarchy.

Now most smokers are less affluent, less educated, and can least afford the cost of maintaining a habit. The only people who smoke are blue collar, poor, or from Marrero. So why do they still love them some cigarettes?

Ummm...lots of people smoke. Doctors, lawyers, congressmen, astronauts, physicists...you name it. The reason? Well I hate smoking, but love smokeless tobacco. You might as well ask why do people drink alcohol? Or use tobacco? Or do drugs? Or drive fast or watch movies or play sports? The answer is because it's fun and makes you feel good. Duh.

Until recently, everyone I know who smoked was a hipster.

A few months ago some backoffice insurance company moved into to our building, and I really think 80% of their office smokes. I don't know if they relocated the entire office from 1988 or what.

Stupid people do stupid stuff. In large numbers.
Drive through a trashy trailer park or walk through a shitty Walmart and notice all of the very fat people

Do you have any data to back that up. I know plenty of people, rich and poor, dumb and smart, that smoke. So how did you come to this conclusion?

Life experience is all of the data you need. If you smoke in Scottsdale, besides on a bars patio, you will get stared at like you have 2 heads. If you drive a few miles into the poorer areas of Phoenix you will see people smoking EVERYWHERE!

Smoking helps keep them distracted from the meth cravings.

I believe that if you are on welfare you should not be allowed to smoke cigarettes. Anyone that gets caught should immediately stop receiving welfare.
