Try and round up as much people as you can quick. I would use a triangle technique if you know the general direction it ran. Your best options is doing a lot of back and forth walking if a dog is unavailable.

I also believed if he went down he is dead somewhere > 200 yds away. I recently had a similar situation where the deer acted like it wasnt shot at all and pranced off. Turns out it went through both lungs and drop 50 yards out in a thicket. If I knew rain was coming I would have pursued that deer as soon as possible to try and get a second shot.

I would grid the area with some friends till you find him. You'd be surprised how much ground you can cover. Good Luck!

Definitely check all waterways or ponds if any are near by. Same thing happened with my buck this year.

Idk if it's been said yet, but I've seen the stomach or gut plug up the exit wound before when a deer is quartering to a shooter. The times I've seen it, the deer didn't go far, just little to no blood.

A few ????s to help clarify the situation:
Distance to the deer?
WHERE were the crosshairs on the deer when you shot?
Was it a clear shot or was there branches, saplings and such between you and the deer?
Did you find ANY signs of a hit deer, e.g. hair, fat or bone?
I don't know what to think of the smell. If you hit the entrails bad enough to smell the entrails, I'd think there's be some signs (brown blood, guts, fluid, etc.) from the shot.
What load were you shooting?

I shot one that did the same thing. He got up and hit the woods. I thought he just ran straight but I couldn't find any blood. Went home and got my dad's dog he found him in a few minutes. As soon as the deer hit the thicket he took a hard left turn.

That deer isn't far away but the rain can really make it hard to find.

If you cant find anything today then get out in the area tomorrow and get directly under the circling buzzards with a few people and fan out and find it that way.

Couyon is dead on.

If you can't get a dog in the next 24 hrs I would head in to where you last saw him after getting back in the stand and taking a compass reading of the deers general direction.
If the terrain is flat, use the compass heading. If hilly or ridges are present, the deer will generally stay on a least resistance path, going down into bottoms or ditches/creeks. If you have a bedding area that way even better, since many times I have seen hit deer head towards the nearest bedding area. It is a safe haven for them and they fall back on the travel when all else fails.
Good luck..hope you find him.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Ms. Lippy! The part in the story I don't like is that the little boy gave up looking for The deer after an hour. He didn't go get a dog or anything, he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. That little boy's gotta think: 'You Shot a deer. You got a responsibility.' If your deer is lost, you don't look for an hour then call it quits; you get your arse out there and you find that frickin' deer!

Good luck. It sure is a shitty feeling.

Just meant that as bad as it is to lose a doe it seems like it may be worse to lose a really nice buck.
