“Its genome is similar to viruses that have been found in eastern Europe, Africa and Asia, but no virus like that has ever been identified in the western hemisphere,”

Dubbed the “Bourbon virus,” — its only victim lived in Bourbon County, Kansas — the new virus is thought to be carried by ticks, Hawkinson said.

Fever, anorexia and muscle aches can be symptoms of the virus, the infectious disease expert added.

“This was the first known instance and the only confirmed case,” Rosenow said. “This is a new virus, and we are still learning.”

Well this makes me excited about my annual turkey trip to Missouri where I've found it nearly impossible to not get covered in ticks. Even when I can go a week with only having to pull 2 or 3 off of me I'll randomly see them crawling around my truck for what seems like a month after I get home.
