I figured that we should create this thread...

I would consider myself as a Dummy.

I have some nice, albeit older set of speakers that were given to me.

-Two Definitive Technology Towers
-DT Center
-Two DT Surrounds
-Polk Audio Sub

-I don't know the exact model numbers but I would say they are probably 5-7 years old and appear pretty nice.

My biggest question is about the Components needed to run these speakers. I have no clue about receivers, amps, Pre-Amps, etc....

Help Me. Maybe someone can write up a decent review of potential pieces for a home theater and we can have it bookmarked in this first post or even quoted.

Or maybe someone can make a stickied thread with info and links?

You have a set of speakers that play from both sides...bi-polar. You should google the model number and learn about speaker placement.

Towers

Surrounds

Couldn't find a picture of the center... But it's a Definitive Technology from around the same time.

The sub is a polk audio... probably 10-15 years old... so maybe not amazing.

But for a bunch of free stuff, i think it was a nice haul

Pick up a 5.1 receiver for cheap. Make sure it has at least two or three HDMI inputs. Mine has 4 but I only use 3 of them for now.

Play with it and learn the various configurations and formats for surround. Example: DTS surround. DVD DTS wouldn't play right unless I hooked up a digital audio cable, but Blu Ray seems ok. Took some tinkering. FWIW, I have a Yamaha RX-V377. So far I love it.

Also remember that speaker placement is important and you have to create a basic sound field sweet spot in between the fronts and backs.
