re: GOP won't forgive Rand for playing footsie with SharptonPosted by RollTide4Ever on 12/23/14 at 8:01 am to Eurocat
This isn't the 80s, nobody gives a damn.
That's a fairly strained theory. I am sure someone in the primaries will try to make an issue of it, but I also suspect that people will put Rand's statements/actions in the proper context.

Writing Thursday in an opinion piece in Time, Paul noted that the wild scene of police in tactical gear apparently firing teargas and rubber pellets and pointing automatic weapons at people in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson resembled a “war more than a traditional police action.”
"Given the racial disparities in our criminal justice system, it is impossible for African-Americans not to feel like their government is particularly targeting them," he wrote in Time.
"When you couple this militarization of law enforcement with an erosion of civil liberties and due process ... we begin to have a very serious problem on our hands," he wrote.

It is not a question of what is or is not wrong with "that take", the question is will such an opion find support among GOP primary voters. The Original article linked shows that the GOP has been (almost blindly) pro Cop since the days of Nixon. And they do not appear to be willing to change, at least not at this time.
Just wait until the attack ads start from other GOP candidates.

I have no problem with what he said. He isn't race baiting or defending Brown. He is looking at the larger, more important issue and that's the ever increasing power given to police.
On the other have though, real change will only happen when blacks themselves work to make their communities better. When events like ferguson happen, it only strengthens the argument for a stronger police force because white people, who are the vast majority of the population, will feel threatened and want police to contain such violence. And they will vote accordingly to ensure the police have the resources to do so. So you end up with a militarized police force targeting minorities and the problem exacerbates.
Both sides have to work toward a common goal, not just 1 side, if you want change to happen.

The GOP was also pro-intervention for a long time and that has seemed to change recently.

All I care about today is that the GOP is pro-Obama and whatever the Democrats want and that is going to be the nail in their coffin.

Militarizing the police is unnecessary. That's why we have the military (national guard). Militarization erodes the community relationship between the police and the neighborhood citizens.
Also, IMO police shouldn't be implementing riot control. That's a much larger issue than local and state police should be ordered to handle. That's a national guard issue.

That's a national guard issue.
I don't want the military of any branch patrolling any U.S. street unless they are looking for foreign combatants who have attacked us.
The only exception would be some type of rescue operation such as after Katrina in New Orleans.
