Why did RAGE get so much hate?

I have been firing up old games that were graphic intensive on my new system, and just loaded this one. I have played through it twice and love the game but a lot of gamers hated on it and I don't know why.

I believe the main complaints were that it was too short and the driving mini game was more fun than the regular game.

It was a sign of things to come sadly. I know the ending was rushed and a lot of people didn't like that.

I know the pre-apocalyptic survivor scenario is not original at this point, but RAGE kind of tantalized me only to just muck it all up with a really generic story. The driving portion was awesome and the shooting mechanics were so good but I mean the story was botched and the ending was awful.

I really enjoyed the 5-6 or so hours I spent playing it. But there really was not much else to do after the campaign was finished and I dont believe any dlc was added later.

It got delayed. People were disappointed by its open world and it came out near Borderlands which stole nearly all of its hype that was left.
