I've come to favor both but equally.....

Ftr, (old fashion) I don't muddle an orange slice leading to cloudy crap, but leave it to the rind only. Cherries are garnish only.

I muddle both. Sue me.
Then, I garnish with another cherry for style.

I muddle 2 sugar cubes, a few dashes of bitters, a wedge of orange with rind, and 2 Luxardo cherries. Add 4 ounces of Makers Mark and stir. Strain and serve over ice.

Old fashion and it's not even close.

The old fashion is the perfect drink.

It's called an Old Fashioned - with an -ed.

I prefer a Manhattan. It's my second or third favorite cocktail, depending on the season.

ETA: Oh, and a Manhattan must be made with rye IMO.

Also a nod to the vieux carre cocktail:
Rye whiskey
Cognac
Sweet vermouth
Benedictine
Bitters

Ingredients cost $$$ but dam it's a great drink for bourbon/cognac lovers

I tend to agree on the rye. However, recently been making them with the single barrel Knob Creeks 120 proof from Calandros. And damn they're good!

I've been on an old fashioned kick. Been making them with EC12. I think i'm going to try a Manhattan soon. I've got some Michter's Rye (and that knob creek from Calandros),Luxardo cherries,Angustora, Peychauds and Regan's bitters. I need to get some Vermouth. Any recommendations?

My fav is Boissiere. 2nd is Dolin. I find Antica too harsh for the Manhattan. Try to find the Fee Bros. Whiskey barrel aged bitters(Calandros). They make a huge diff. I love Peychaud's but in the Manhattans I like the Fee's better. Add a drop of Angostura to take it over the top.
