I don't know how, but I had never seen this movie before last night. I recently had it recommended to me at a dinner party. They sort of recommendation where everyone at the table is like "REALLY...YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT? IT'S CLASSIC".

Anyway, I thought it was ridiculously bad. Am I missing something? I assumed the idea is that it pulled at the heartstrings of viewers that were parents. I have to say, as a parent and a grandparent, it did not. The whole thing appears to have aged about as well as sour milk.

Every single aspect of it was just so contrived. I think this is a good example of how much better filmmaking is today. Even Ron Howard movies are better than this today.

I remember thinking it was decent enough back in the day, even though it was sort of stupid at times. And the brother's fascination with all things Keanu always weirded me out for whatever reason...I hated that kid.

You mean "Leaf" (aka Joaquin) Phoenix? That was actually something I was taken completely by surprise with. I had no idea he was in it.

I haven't seen it in years. I remember liking it when I was younger, but I'm sure I wouldn't think as highly if I saw it today. Guess I don't want to ruin my memories of it by watching it again.

I do remember that it had a lot of memorable lines in it though.

I've always found Martin to be obnoxious. I think the only movie of his that I enjoy is The Jerk.

He's actually funny in it though, so I can deal with obnoxious and funny. Otherwise I think he's just obnoxious and not funny.

ETA: I forgot about Three Amigos. That movie is legit.

Well its not like it's must see or anything. I saw it once around the time it came out and haven't seen it since.

Probably. I'm older now, and I relate more to Steve Martin's character. And I will pretty much always pay money to see Dianne Wiest, who is a pretty great, if criminally underused, actress.

I think the movie is unashamed to tackle the problems of being middle class, which is often treated with utter disdain by Hollywood and cultural critics.

Haven't seen Parenthood, but it seems a lot of those movies from the 80s don't hold up well. As if merely casting Steve Martin or John Candy is sufficient. I Watched Bowfinger and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels recently and both are not funny.
