If and when we finally encounter aliens, they probably won’t look like little green men, or spiny insectoids. It’s likely they won’t be biological creatures at all, but rather, advanced robots that outstrip our intelligence in every conceivable way. While scores of philosophers, scientists and futurists have prophesied the rise of artificial intelligence and the impending singularity, most have restricted their predictions to Earth. Fewer thinkers—outside the realm of science fiction, that is—have considered the notion that artificial intelligence is already out there, and has been for eons.

Interesting article

By the time a society is at a technological level where it can make a significant impact on space/other planets, is a time when society is probably also producing super advanced AIs. These AIs turn on their makers and destroy their civilization.

It's why we have not been visited by super advanced beings. By the time a species gets so advanced that it can travel to other worlds and make a meaningful impact, that species is probably at war/about to be at war with its AIs.

Humanity will destroy itself before we reach the point of singularity

How crazy would it be if we were the most advanced civilization in the universe? Like, there could possibly be millions or billions out there....but there has to be one that comes first.

Possible.

There could be thousands of life forms like us who think they are alone.

Then a galaxy over, there could be a star system where a life form knew they weren't alone the minute they looked at another planet in their system with their first telescope; and multiple planets have life.

Just weird to think about

That would be extremely depressing.

I agree, it is incomprehensibly unlikely. However, the very, very, very small chance that we are.....what do we do?

Here's another thing to ponder:

IF there is other intelligent life out there that is somewhat humanoid, will they have an economic system more similar to central planning or free markets?

Kind of makes me think about the Atlantis trilogy...about a master humanoid alien race that basically oversees different types life on different planets and uses them for different purposes to try to sustain themselves against a interstellar conquering AI race.

Can't buy this...I didn't read the article but did they say anything about the origins of these robots? They obviously had to come from something else

The argument goes like this:

Once a species gets so dominant that it can create extremely powerful AI, those AI will quickly turn on the species and destroy it.

The mathematical ignorance to assume that such an extremely unlikely anomaly has taken place isn't as bad as the arrogance in believing we are the most advanced beings in the Cosmos. The 149th brightest guy on the TigerDroppings PoliticalBoard ( ) believes whatever intelligent life is out there isn't as smart as he is.

There's rankings now? This might not bode well for me.
