We always had a real tree growing up... we would go buy a pine tree of some type from the nursery with roots still attached...
It would stay in a big pot/bucket with a tree skirt to hide the bucket during the month and we would water it... after christmas we would plant it.
my parents land has about 15 plus trees along a border that were our christmas trees ... kinda cool to me...

I've never had a Christmas tree, growing up or as an adult, so I don't get the tree thing either. I'm pretty apathetic towards Christmas in general.
My wife will probably want to put up a tree next year or so as our daughter gets older. Just doesn't seem worth the trouble right now since we are never home for Christmas anyways.
My sister put up a tree in her house and my mom cried and told her that she was going to burn in Hell
My parents really hate Christmas.
