I'm giving my 2 year old my ipad mini. Almost the entire memory was taken up with Disney movies anyway.
FWIW there are some great apps out there for teaching kids about letters, numbers etc.

The app Endless ABC is great for little kids. Teaches them letters and pronunciation and spelling while also teaching them how to use touch screen interfaces. A tablet can be an excellent learning device for kids. Its all how you allow them to use it. Its better than sitting them in front of the TV. My son watches his movies on long drives and trips but on the way back from daycare he watches videos to help him learn new words. The alternative is him daydreaming while looking out the window.

My 3 year old does puzzles and paints and plays other mind simulating games, mostly trains crap, on the kindle that was for my wife.
I guess you never played Nintendo growing up, just found other things to do that weren't electronic. I remember rock n sock em robots was hours of fun like Mike Tyson Punchout was.
There's nothing wrong with kids becoming tech savvy. it's the world we live in. Just need to teach them not to be like mommy and every other woman on this earth farting around on their phone shopping and facebooking and pinteresting all frickin day.
Tablets can be used as educational tools, not just jack off, candy crush and fagbook/twatter/instashit devices.

Kids these days are 100x smarter with technology than anyone 30 and above at their respective ages.
Hell it wasn't until I was in college that even fricking knowing how to use a computer was socially acceptable. When I was in HS knowing how to program or even connect to the internet via BBS's was a thing people considered that only nerds did.
Today many toddlers know how to use a computer. Dumb parents have existed since the dawn of time. For them it wouldn't matter if they had a tablet, TV or a rock and a stick. Their kid would still come out dumb as a rock.

Really makes me want to start a thread asking how much RAM i should get in the Mac Pro I'm buying for my dog.
ETA: I love the "why don't you get her something that she can learn with" responses. Like tablets aren't world class learning devices. I've taught my 8 year old son the basics of coding with the Hopscotch app. He has a math app that he used to play with all the time and is a big reason why I think he's ahead of most of the kids in his class in mathematics.

That 1985 Nintendo would cost the equivalent of $600 today. And it didn't have the ability to teach you shite unless you consider shooting a duck with an orange light gun productive.

I'm not buying my 2 year anything. My iPad mini is being replaced by a Samsung Galaxy tab S 8.4 so I can have expandable memory. So throwing the iPad in a protective case and letting the son have it.

I don't think many people are going to advocate spending that on a tablet for a toddler, but there are plenty of tablets in more reasonable price ranges with a variety of educational uses. But there's no such thing as moderation, is there? It's all 2 year olds with excessive tech hardware spending all day long glued to a screen with no educational value or parent interaction. Couldn't possibly be just one of many tools for teaching, learning, and occasional respite among an arsenal of resources that parents didn't always have but would've absolutely used had they existed. Nah. All or nothing, right?
Every generation bitches about the parenting and recreational habits of the generation next in line, failing to even attempt to draw any similarities in their own childhoods. If they didn't do it as a child, no child should do it. Because they turned out fine, right? Sort of judgemental a-hole-ish, but otherwise fine.

If you want to let your kid play an educational game put it on your tablet and supervise them while they play. No reason to waste your money buying a two year old their own tablet.
