Good evening, FDB.

I have never had sushi, but I feel like it is time to dive off into it.

Is there a certain type of sushi that is more preferred for beginners?

Im up to try anything, just looking for recommendations, favorites, etc.

Get a couple of pieces of nigiri (fish on the rice)

Maybe a seafood salad.

For rolls, spicy tuna roll is good for a beginner.

Just look at the description of the rolls and choose some that have ingredients you like.

I wouldn't order any of the first post above. None of those contain raw fish.

Be sure and get the $18 dollar rolls topped with mayonnaise.

If you're squeamish about raw fish, there are a lot of cooked options - shrimp, crawfish, eel, artificial crab, etc.

Beware of the raw white fish - for me and some other people, it can get you into big time bathroom trouble FAST (like 1/2 hour) if you're one of us.

Don't hesitate to use your hands to pick up the sushi - you don't have to use chopsticks if you're not great at that. Sushi IS considered finger food.

For your dipping sauce: Put some wasabi into the little flat dishes they have. Put a few drops of soy sauce into it and mix in with your fork to make a paste. Then add more soy sauce, mix well and dip your sushi pieces in that. I prefer to use low sodium soy sauce, but if that's not on the table, I'll thin the regular sauce with a spoonful or 2 of unsweetened iced tea so the taste is a little weaker.

The pink tuna is probably my favorite. But for me the appeal isn't just taste - the texture is wonderful. Salmon can be hit or miss - sometimes you get a bit of connective tissue that messes up the texture.

I know they didn't have the best health code inspections, but I really miss the Oki Nagi buffet.

Eating sushi is like learning to enjoy good wine or bourbon. Start tame and work your way to the raw stuff after awhile...

It's something that you gain an appreciation for over time, in my opinion. I was very hesitant to try it, and really didn't like it the first couple of times. But I kept trying more and more, and I guess my palate became more refined, and now I love it.

Get some specialty rolls if you don't want to try straight up sashimi first. Never order nasty crap like mayonnaise laden crunchy rolls or the boring, bland California rolls.

And a lot of restaurants serve Crudo now, which would be another option to try something that is somewhat similar to sushi and sashimi.

My place does fresh salmon in the philly.

Bold move for a Virgin, but a really good place would be a game changer.

Spicy tuna roll is good. Also, any special roll that has pepper tuna on top. Also not totally raw, but it gets you used to the texture.

I haven't since they got a few more rolls with fresh japs in it.

(I enjoyed the inappropriate double entendre too much to change my usual abv.)

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the mildness of the raw fish. Any preconceived thoughts you have about eating raw fish will not be met. Frankly, the cooked shrimp sushi has a much stronger flavor than does raw tuna or salmon.

It's all good, you just have to find out what you prefer. I tend to stay away from the cooked, fried, or heavily sauced items.

Sushi is a waste of good fish? Are we talking sashimi and nigiri as well? Or just the rolls with all the crazy ingredients?

By far my favorites. I'm not sure where you eat your sushi, but I would recommend changing locations.

The thing you should do is find the friend of yours that eats it the most, or at least eats the most diversely.

See if they will go with you. They should be able to give you good recs. Have them get a small sashimi platter/sampler, and you can try one or two that look good. They can also tell you a roll or two to try.

You shouldn't really have to waste anything with the other person there.
