I mean, I'm cool with the gays, lesbians, and bisexuals in LGB but in no fricking way do I believe the T or in other words, transgenders, are good for this country and they should never be accepted or promoted as normal.
Transgenders should have full rights like everybody else but they shouldn't be granted specific rights and it should be discouraged as much as possible by the state in order to prevent transgenderism taking a hold in pop culture.
This. All of it.

Its not just "distress", but "distress to the individual" aka its a subjective term that isn't based on a clinician's judgment as to what should or shouldn't cause one distress.
In other words, politics trump logic.
It's a mental illness.

Should people who think they are Napolean have special rights geared towards acceptance? Or should they be treated for mental illness?

Attorney General Holder announced today that the Department of Justice will take the position in litigation that the protection of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 extends to claims of discrimination based on an individual’s gender identity, including transgender status. Attorney General Holder informed all Department of Justice component heads and United States Attorneys in a memo that the department will no longer assert that Title VII’s prohibition against discrimination based on sex excludes discrimination based on gender identity per se, including transgender discrimination, reversing a previous Department of Justice position. Title VII makes it unlawful for employers to discriminate in the employment of an individual “because of such individual’s…sex,” among other protected characteristics.
Why do we even have a judicial branch anymore?
quote:
The Attorney General’s memo is designed to foster consistent treatment of claimants throughout the government and reduce confusion. In addition to applying to the department’s civil obligations in defending federal interests, this memo clarifies the Civil Rights Division’s ability to file Title VII claims against state and local public employers on behalf of transgender individuals. The Department of Justice does not have authority to file suit against private employers.
Well, at least there's that.
DOJ BS

You can have that opinion because you find it disturbing. I think its quite strange myself. That doesn't mean that in and of itself its a recognized clinical entity (despite the super scientific psychology today link in the OP), hence OP's premise is faulty:
quote:
Clearly the Civil Rights Act was intended to prevent employers from discriminating against people with clinically recognized mental disorders.

There are more mentally ill posters on this board that should worry about their own psychosis, and not those of anyone outside of their definitions of gender.

I am a fan of Deadliest Catch on Discovery and Wild Bill Wichrowski is captain of one of the boats featured on the show.
If you aren't familiar, here is Wild Bill...
If you watch the show you know that Bill isn't an owner/operator, he is employed by the boat's owner to serve as captain. You also know that Bill is one grouchy SOB.
Suppose it turns out that the reason Bill has been so grouchy all of these years is because deep inside his desire to become a woman has been tearing him apart.
Also, suppose that he just can't stand to live as a man anymore so he travels to Seattle and has gender reassignment surgery.
Fast forward several months and upon returning to Dutch Harbor, the exuberant newly minted Wild Pamela Wichrowski enters the wheelhouse - beard shaved, nasty grey hair in a pony tail, wearing makeup, jewelry, a skirt and a blouse - much to the alarm and horror of his crew.
The First Mate calls the boat owner in a panic and says, 'guess what, Bill came back to the docks and he is now a woman'.
According to Eric Holder, there is nothing that boat owner can do.
He can't question Pamela/Bill's sanity or his fitness to command.
He can't question whether or not he should entrust the lives of the five other crew members to this guy.
He can't question the obvious distress caused to everybody else involved in working and living in close quarters with this guy.
He can't question whether he can entrust a million dollars of his property to this guy.
According to Eric Holder, he should simply wish them a safe trip and tell them good luck fishing and it would be discrimination and a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to do otherwise.
Now I understand this is an extremely hyperbolic example but it underscores how ridiculous of a decision this is on the part of Holder's Justice Dept.
I also apologize to Bill for putting the stink on him - Wild Bill, I'm sorry.

There are three genders - he, she, and it.

Bravo Eric, bravo.
yeah, people with depression, add, anxiety, and insomnia should be able to be fired at will because they are sad, anxious or awake too often.

If I identified with a unicorn and got plastic surgery to look more like one, I think it would be obvious that there was something not right with me. But if I want to be a woman, I'm now a protected and celebrated minority.

Your example actually makese think transgenders should have legal protection. Nothing you said makes transgender sound any different from race in terms of one's ability to do the job.

I question the mental stability of someone who wants to intentionally permanently mutilate him / herself in such a manner.

Does this mean that I can put on women's clothing to keep from being fired?

When can i start showering with the MILFs at the gym?
I need this to help keep me "sane".

As a matter of fact, yes you can.
It turns out the character Klinger on MASH was actually a sign of things to come, not just an asinine and outrageous juxtaposition for comedic effect like we all though he was.
Also, I would like to add that I have decided that I no longer wish to be an Italian.
I am actually an Asian on the inside and everyone must now call me Nguyen, my new Asian name.

quote:You know the treatment for gender dysphoria is sex reassignment, right?
Gender identity disorder (GID) or transsexualism is defined by strong, persistent feelings of identification with the opposite gender and discomfort with one's own assigned sex.
Turns out it's actually way easier to alter someone's body to match their brain than the other way around.

You know the psychological results of sex reassignment are usually abysmal, right?

If it doesn't cause the person significant distress or functional impairment, then they actualy don't have a mental disorder.
Delusional disorders say your wrong. So does any other disorder that the individual believes is not a problem. It's still there. Heart disease exists even if your patient does not feel it or acknowledge it.

Turns out that it's actually easier to treat people who 'hear voices in their head' by having someone follow them around and whisper in their ear. That way they actually do hear voices and are no longer crazy.
Moreover, once they receive this treatment they are immediately fully cured of any underlying pathology.

Let me just pile up a few PubMed links that say exactly the opposite: LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK LINK okay I'm bored now. I eagerly await your half-assed link from some dumbass social conservative website that will probably make some vague claim like "transgendered people have lots of problems" without doing anything remotely as rigorous as comparing cohorts before and after.
