I know it sounds lame, and I hate to keep repeating it, but you can try visiting other parts of the city from time to time.

I would love to visit other parts of the city, but honestly, if we don't feel safe walking around heavily trafficked main roads in the Quarter like Bourbon and Canal, it makes me wonder what the rest of the city would be like. We've driven down St. Charles before, but we took a wrong turn off of it once when trying to get back to our hotel and we drove into what appeared to be a street festival - so many people came running up to our car yelling at us, begging for money, etc., that we decided to stick to the major tourist areas.

Anyway, I like reading threads like this one - we're trying to learn more about the city.

FQ is lame. Garden District and Uptown are safe for the most part. Just stay away from the hood rats.

Well they have to do something. I'm a Nola resident and I'm not optimistic. I think NOPD is understaffed. This seems to be a reoccurring them.

Just this past week in Lafayette I spoke on the radio about the Lafayette media's obsession with promoting New Orleans as a "destination city" to entice cajun fans to the New Orleans Bowl. My words were simple

"New Orleans is a destination city of you are clueless and live in Minnesota. But, if you are from Lafayette, it's nothing more than 2 hours driving to get drunk and robbed'

And I'm glad redneck retarded asses like you generally stay out of the city. Educated tourist from around the world come to N.O. for great food, architecture, museums, theatre, and great bars, etc. And not the kind of bars where clueless punkasses walk around with big green drinks in plastic cups.

Look, if you are scared of seeing black people, you are probably right. Not much of the city will appeal to you.

I tell my lilly white old relatives that they can stay at Harrah's or the Lowes hotel, walk up and down Fulton street and feel like they got to see N.O. and not feel threatened.
But that's boring as shite.

Get a hotel in the Warehouse district and explore that area.
St. Charles, especially uptown as well as Magazine are all perfectly safe. When's the last time you all went out to city park? There is a bunch of shite out there now that is fun.

Freret Street and Oak street are cool little areas.

I'm not kidding when I say it amazes me how many people only know about Bourbon street and crappy clubs and overpriced bad restaurants.

Do you think it could ever happen where the shitty bourbon st bars start closing because of the lack of busines? Then nice bars around the rest of the city boom and they take a chance and start replacing the shitty ones? The french quarter as a high end destination...oh what a dream.

You would think you'd find them in Metairie and Kenner by the way it is described as trash so often but nope! You find all that in the heart of nola!

NOPD is overstaffed with functional retards and criminals still. In all of my years, I have only met 3 or 4 NOPD cops that I would trust holding my phone for 10 minutes

This happened??? Damn.

Sucks to hear all of this. The FQ has always been awesome to me and my friends. Can not wrap my head around the NOPD knowing the crime has gone up and not have the FQ crawling with police.

Sadly it sounds like it is going to take one death. One midwest corn fed young woman/girl getting shot and the FQ will go in the shitter. You will get ONLY Tijuana type tourists. Young college kids who give two shits where they party or how dangerous.

I have always adhered to only going one block north of Bourbon and avoiding side streets at night. And not going past St. Phillip at night. It is the gay side anyway. The only place down there that is not a gay bar is Lafitte's and that can be done during the day. But Canal has gotten scarier and scarier over the years. Even if you are between Bourbon and Royal.

I don't think this can EVER happen. It is like Vegas and The Strip. Locals are never going to stoop to the level of touristy areas. More of an attitude thing really. There are some nice places to go in the FQ but the locals won't go simply because "locals don't go there." I understand you don't want to go to Razoo's and Cats Meow. I get that. But EVERY FQ bar is not shitty.

This thread really saddens me. Not this post particularly. I understand if I lived there I would get sick of the FQ. But that eve The Quarter has gotten this crime ridden. I am (WAS) always ready to kick a thousand dollars into the coffers of NO tourism.
