French Quarter robberies

I've lived in NOLA my whole life. I live uptown, work in the CBD, and have spent many drunken nights in the french quarter.
Whenever friends / tourists ask me if the FQ is safe, I have generally told them that it is and to just stay in groups and stay in high foot traffic areas.
I cannot with a clear conscience tell them that anymore. Its obvious that there is more and more targeting of innocent people walking in the quarter. NOPD gets worse by the day, and these thugs know it. They have no fear of getting caught, because they so rarely do get caught.
The downtown area, specifically the FQ, has been one of the most phenomenal economic engines in the country over the last 5 years. These business owners need to do something NOW to avoid putting all that at risk. It only takes one Rolling Stone type publication to publish a damning expose on how dangerous the FQ has become.
If you are a NOLA resident, i encourage you to carry a firearm if you plan to travel to the FQ, especially at night.

People just need to avoid the FQ. I love NOLA and have probably been to the FQ only 4 times this year. Only twice was it after dark. It's just not a wise thing to do.

no the answer is for NOPD to do its job. I always felt Nola did a great job of keeping the high crime out of visible areas.

I live in the Quarter, and you're fricking crazy.
You say you always tell friends/tourists to "stay in high foot traffic areas." That's good advice. Note that neither of the robberies in the story you link to took place in high foot traffic areas (1000 block of Gov Nichols and 100 block of Dauphine)...

A buddy of mine and two girls were victims of an armed robbery on Gov. Nicholls and Burgundy. It's crazy to think about it because we have been in that area countless times. I'm aware that it's very residential, but I never felt unsafe. I guess I always had a big group with me though. The French Quarter is the last place New Orleans needs crime.

Pickpocketing has been happening for a long time. You aren't going to stop a petty thief from pulling a wallet or something out of a purse. However, the violent robberies can be shut down. Bring out the horses and let NOPD go to bat on the criminals. The only times I have really felt that i wasn't safe in nola have been drunken walks at 4 am back to the hotel.

The State Troopers should have never left.

Yeah, like you said, pickpocketing =/= pressing a gun to your head.
I think they NOPD should come equipped with German Shepherds. Let them loose on them...let them gnaw on them for a minute and then beat the shite out of them with a nightstick before arresting them.

FWIW id be ok with NOPD shifting almost all resources to the tourist areas and business areas. id leave the lower income area to its own devices. Tourism, business and nice areas are what keep the city humming along.
