I have a 40 , which was used for my patrol pistol until they made us all switch to glocks. I absolutely love mine and wish we never had to switch.

Sir ChatRabbit let me borrow it to review like a true gent.

On first inspection prior to shooting, I can already tell what's gonna bother me and what will be nice:

1. The cutout in the slide isn't necessary for a competition gun in my opinion

2. It has kind of a high bore axis

3. The grip safety will probably drive me crazy

4. Non-captive guide rod with standard coil spring (although not a crucial flaw, flat wound springs are superior)

The pros though:

1. The sight picture is one of the best I've seen on a factory gun

2. The trigger is okay - not as bad as a factory M&P but not as good as a Glock

3. The magazine is huge - 19 rounds of 9mm, 16 rounds of 40, and 13 rounds of 45, respectively

4. The gun comes with a LOT of accessories (cleaning rod, holster, mag holster, 3 back straps, green and red fiber)

5. Ambi mag release

That's my first take at least...

I have the 4.5 XDM 9mm.

I love it. It's my first "own" weapon. Shot plenty of my dad's weapons. It's my home defense. Wasn't worried about CC.
As bapple said. Great sight picture. Large capacity. Comfortable grip. Personally love the trigger pull.

My choices came down to a glock (19 or 26) or an XDM. I had decided 9mm was a for sure. My dad had a glock 19 so I went with the Springfield. Very happy with it. Easy to use, take down, and clean.

Bapple, looking forward to your full review as a proud owner

They feel great in my hand, good trigger, slightly less recoil, and I shoot those better than Glocks.
The two different sized mag options on the compacts are also a great feature.

I have a 4.5" .40 and love it. My cousin purchased a Glock around the same time I purchased my XDM. After shooting both he said wished he had shot my XDM before he purchased his Glock.

I like them a bunch. What ruled out other guns? Was it barrel length? If not, I would look hard at a PPQ or VP9. I really really liked the XDm but when I held those other two and pulled the trigger, I fell in love.

Vp9 fits my hand unlike any other gun.

an over priced Croatian gun that Springfield slapped it's name on.

It'll be a home defense/truck gun. I like 1911's a lot but I don't want the added action of pulling the hammer back in a pressure situation. Add in cool looks, high capacity, and manufacturer and that's how I came to that decision

1911's aren't meant to be carried like that FWIW. They are usually cocked and locked. You just put the safety down.

What all guns have you considered? There is nothing wrong with the XDm and it will perform about as good as any of the modern handguns from reputable manufacturers but I would hate it if you didn't look at others you might like better.

Striker fired options:
XDm/s
Glock
HK VP9 (My current gun)
Walther PPQ
M&P pro/non
Ruger SR's
FN FNS
Sig P320

I think that's it but I feel like I'm missing something.

Yeah but the wife wouldn't be thrilled with seeing it cocked at all times. At least with a striker fire I can lie and say there isn't one in the pipe

haha mine is the same. Make sure not to show her the cocked indicator and loaded indicator on the guns then. In all seriousness though, you do need to show her those so she knows in high stress situations.

You could go with a DA/SA gun like a Beretta 92, CZ75 or FNP. You have the option of carrying cocked and locked OR hammer down and first shot being dual action. It also has second strike capabilities if the round didn't go off. Only downside is to "get use to" the da on first shot just in case.

She's dead in those situations. One weekend I was at the camp and she thought she heard someone outside at night. Grabbed my unloaded 870 and went check it out. She didn't have a plan for what to do with it, I guess she thought she would scare them off
