Here are some $800 rifles that if you do some smart shopping you can find in your price range or really close.
Not an A-Bolt, but an X-Bolt:

Not big on the gray stock, but you can hunt with it for a year and then get it dipped whatever color/camo you desire.

Savage Hog Hunter - your welcome

The only thing I question with the "economy" and "entry level" rifles is in 40 years from now when I hand that rifle over to my future grandchild will it still be a 1" MOA gun?
That is a valid point I suppose and is more about durability and care of the firearm. Certainly a weapon used to shoot even 20 rounds a year (that is a lot for a hunting rifle) over 40 years is not going to come close to wearing out the barrel or bolt. Other than that poor care and damage would bee the only reasons I can see for a gun to go from sub MOA to poor groups. The most common here would be crown damage on the barrel from improper transportation.

My dad had a Winchester economy model bolt action rifle that wouldn't group if the barrel was remotely warm, it was closer to 3-4" groupings. Cold shots were fine though
then that is an inhereintly bad weapon that either had a barrel that warpped too much with heat or was improperly glassed in or not freefloating.
FWIW all of my Savage rifles shoot 1" MOA. I rarely do though. Once the barrel gets too hot to hold (about 10 shots) on a summer day, the groups start spreading out a bit. but stay well within the killzone diameter of everything I hunt. I don't know many guns that shoot the same cold as they do hot.

Lots of good recs so I'll not muddy the water further by telling you to buy the scpecific bolt action rifles I have right now. Tikka gets a lot of love on the OB and I'm sure they make fine rifles, but there are a number of other non-Tikka rifles a person can buy, hunt w/ a number of years and use to kill a lot of game, all w/o having to made any upgrades or changes. For an entry level bolt, I'd suggest the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Howa or Marlin. Since you're able to spend a little more money, I'd look at other models by Savage, Weatherby, Browning, Ruger, Winchester Model 70, Remington Model 700 (if you don't mind their politics) and Tikka (solely on the testimonials I've read here). You'll notice I just recommeneded nearly every maker of bolt action rifles. There's one thing I'd suggest that's not yet been recommened (maybe becuase it's so obvious): go to the store and HANDLE the guns; compare the indidivaual traits of the guns (e.g. do you want a tang safty, a three position wing safety, a two position safety, etc). I expect any well made bolt action rifle nowdays to group around 1-1.5 MOA w/ the appropriate loads. Some will do better. Get the gun that fits YOU and has the characteristics YOU want.

the academy near me had some x-bolts for around $550 for a while and they would occassionally have a sale on them down to $430. none in .308 though.

I'd go pick one up without hardly thinking about it for $430... will have to head out to the Academy here...

Good info. The other thing to consider is whether or not you want a detachable mag, hinged floor plate, or top loader.

"Even Jaguar makes a lemon every now and then." ~40 year old Winchester Model 670A. We had it looked at had a new scope put on it but it shot like that for 20 years. He talked about getting a new one for 15 years so I bought him a new Sako with a Meopta.
I want to look at this one though.

How is that even a question? Detachable Mag FTW!

Sounds about right. A well kept rifle will last a very very long time assuming you don't put 3k rounds through the thing.

Best advice in this thread.

I'm with ya completely. But that's some people's biggest complaint with the Tikka. It's all just preference.
