Guess mother learned the terminology in White Castle.

Not "ground MEAT", mind you, but "ground meat"... said so cursorily that the adjective had little meaning, and might as well have denoted the earth as opposed to meat from the sky.

My grandmother came from White Castle and spoke heavily cajun french accented English. When she said it sounded like "grind meat".

Learned the difference between ground meat and ground beef the hard way. Ground meat contains "meat" that can include beef and other animals. Ground beef contains beef. This according to the local grocery store.

When I was a kid I'd go to my Mawmaws house on the weekend. She didn't drive so my Pawpaw would drive us to Clements IGA and sit in the parking lot while I pushed the buggy for my Mawmaw....... when she would order her grind meat the butcher would weigh out however much of meat she wanted and grind it fresh. There wasnt any meat pre pacackaged in the meat case aside from hot dogs and smoked sausage.

+1

My grandparents and my dad always say 'ground meat' instead of "ground beef".

+1 to that also. She still says it that way. Grandma is not from White Castle, though. Lebeau and Washington.

My mom was not very concise she called it 'hamburger meat.' Even when not to be used for hamburgers. "Zach, I'm gonna make spaghetti and meat balls tonight. Go to the store and buy me some hamburger meat."

Mine would just call it hamburger.

"I have some hamburger left over from the meatloaf the other night. I think I might fix spaghetti".

Mom called it "Ends Meat".

She was always trying to make "Ends Meat"

Tasted fine to us kids. Dad never complained either.
