If you all remember this was originally brought up at the beginning of the football season.

Turned into nothing.

quote:

The FCC on Thursday dismissed a petition filed by a professor claiming the Washington Redskins name is indecent, according to agency sources.

George Washington University Professor John Banzhaf asked the FCC to deny renewal of the broadcast license for a radio station co-owned by Washington team owner Daniel Snyder, because of the repeated use of the word “Redskins.” Attorneys for Snyder have said banning broadcasters’ use of the word would violate free speech and property rights.

The status of similar petitions filed by three Native Americans against TV stations are still active.
The FCC determined that the law defines profanity as sexual or excretory in nature, so it cannot find the word “Redskins” profane.

“We find that there have been no serious violations of the [Communications] Act or the rules involving the station or any other violations that, taken together, would constitute a pattern of abuse,” wrote Peter H. Doyle, chief of the Media Bureau’s audio division.

Banzhaf said he will not stop his effort to get the name banned from the airwaves.

“I’ve got quite a number of options we’re still looking at,” he said in an interview. “I’ve got to sit down with some of my colleagues and see where we go from here. It’s a disappointment, but it’s certainly not the end of the line.”

The issue of the Redskins name has generated a lot of attention lately. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has said in the past that he finds the term “offensive and derogatory.”

In May, 50 Democratic senators sent letters to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell urging him and the league to endorse changing the name. And in August, the team appealed a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office decision to cancel the team’s six federal trademarks.

Good. It's about time that the line is drawn on some of these non-issues that these thin-skinned pussies complain of on a daily basis.

People like this are never satisfied. When this controversy dies down they'll find the next thing to complain about. They get a sense of power if they bitch until they get what they want

99% of the whining about this issue comes from people who oppose a name change. You thin-skinned pussies need to look in a mirror.

Wait, so people who have supported no name change have staged protest and filed lawsuits?

No fricking way. Link?

This makes absolutely no sense.

Why would anyone who is opposed to a name change be making a fuss about it? Logically, the only way anyone opposed to it would be talking about it is because someone wanting it changed started to complain.

None of those threads you posted are about people complaining because they dont want it changed.

Got anything else?

One was pointing out that Congress was stupid for taking on the issue.

Another said he just wanted it to end, no matter which way it went.

How many threads have been started by people calling for a name change?

How many threads have been started by people who really like to use the phrase "pussification of America?"

Regardless of whether or not you oppose the name, surely you can agree this is not the way to go about it

Not sure what you mean. I have an opinion of the name, I suppose, but it isn't my business what Mr. Snyder does with what he owns.

There would be no threads if there were no commotion started by the people calling for the change. I don't see what is so hard to grasp about this.

The people calling for the name change aren't the ones who started the commotion. That's what's so hard for some people to grasp.

That team name is none of my business, but those who complain about the want for a change--and many of them are here--are trapped in a dilemma of dishonesty they've created. Either the name is no big deal, in which case a change doesn't move the needle, or the name is a big deal, in which case the opinion of those wanting a change is legitimized.

In case you care or are curious, I would change the name if I were the owner, but it is not my place to judge Dan Snyder for keeping the name. It just isn't any of my business.
