Could a college student get by with a chromebook?

What do you think?
Basically, said student only uses the Internet, word, and PowerPoint.
Other questions about chromebook : iTunes, Netflix, pictures.

Chromebook can not run Word, PowerPoint, iTunes.
You don't install programs on the Chromebook.
Pretty much imagine Google Chrome and its available extensions as your entire computer.

Google Docs does not adequately replace Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and others iin my opinion.

Of course it doesn't "run" them. But you can write a paper and create a slideshow yes?

With Google Docs. It is nowhere near as sophisticated as Office.

Yes, 100% as long as they don't need microsoft office but google drive seems to be able to handle the same stuff.

Yes, but I wouldn't.
The word on the street is that Microsoft is about to substantially decrease the cost of Windows licenses on new computers which will in turn bring down the laptop cost. They are trying to battle the rise of tablets and chromebooks.
You can also look at buying a laptop without Windows preloaded. Once your kid is enrolled you could buy a deeply discounted student copy of Windows and Office.
There are some pretty cheap laptops out there now that you should look at before buying a chromebook.

OEM's pay about $15 for the Windows License on that laptop.
These days, you can easily find laptops for $400 to $500 bucks.
I would ALWAYS buy that over a Chromebook.

Office Online isn't that bad is it?
Sure it isn't full-blown office but it is a step up from Docs.
