First thing I asked but apparently, people in the US are "reached." This is going to people of other religions. I think there's a high probability they get beheaded.

Your sister sounds like an idiot. Mission work is stupid. Those folks in need would be a lot better off if the dumbass missionaries just sent the money overseas and stayed in America and worked.

6-Day Visit To Rural African Village Completely Changes Woman’s Facebook Profile Picture

quote:

ST. LOUIS—Calling the experience “completely transformative,” local 22-year-old Angela Fisher told reporters Tuesday that her six-day visit to the rural Malawian village of Neno has completely changed her profile picture on Facebook. “As soon as I walked into that dusty, remote town and the smiling children started coming up to me, I just knew my Facebook profile photo would change forever,” said Fisher, noting that she realized early in her nearly weeklong visit just how narrow and unworldly her previous Facebook profile photos had been. “I don’t think my profile photo will ever be the same, not after the experience of taking such incredible pictures with my arms around those small African children’s shoulders. Honestly, I can’t even imagine going back to my old Facebook photo of my roommate and I at an outdoor concert.” Since returning, Fisher said she has been encouraging every one of her friends to visit Africa, promising that it would change their Facebook profile photos as well.

I agree. Sad thing is, they'll be begging for money from here for the entirety of this ordeal. That's just not something I can get on board with.

I can't see how they can't do some actual work in the US, even if it means moving across the country. Plently of people could use things. If you provide to the people of little or no faith, wouldn't a little good will help to turn that around?

Not necessarily.

I definitely don't like the sleight of hand these missionaries use. They go to these third world countries with different cultures and different values, do something nice for them like build a school, improve sanitation or some other project, and then try to convince them that their culture is wrong and the missionaries' culture is right.

Typically, the missionary's culture is anglo-saxon, Western, and conservative.

They also use scare tactics to convince people to join their ways. You know, hell and such.

If missionaries were going over to do the projects, they would be doing the world a favor. Instead, they go there for a few years and leave with their "Get into Heaven" card.

I am pretty sure there was a similar thread about this within the past year. Seems crazy but really not much you can do.

I wish I could get a scam like this going.

I say this as a Christian.

WAY TOO MANY people are doing this "on a whim." I just had some friends that came back from South America after two years. They sold everything they owned and now they are back.

Now, this isn't popular with the megachurch and Baptist crowd that I live around, but the command for mission was to Jerusalem, then Judea and then the world. I interpret that as we should be reaching "unreached" or impoverished people in our own areas before selling everything and moving to another country.

If your sister and her husband live in the Southern U.S., they are likely a half hour from some of the poorest, unreached people they could ever hope to meet. I'd make sure they are 100% confident that this is their call. If they haven't been to seminary to train for the mission field, this is a fad they are chasing and will hurt them in the long run.

If they really want to help overseas, short term mission work is always needed. I say this as someone that has friends that just got back in the country a few months ago after doing the same thing.

This whole progrem is less than 2 years old. They have no idea what they're getting into, where they will be, what the "success" rate is, etc.

To sell everything, quit jobs, etc. I feel like a heathen disagreeing with this.

Some of them do a lot of good, if they bring an actual skill-doctor/nurses, drilling wells for clean drinking water, etc. If they're just going to harangue people, not so much. There are very few places on earth that are truly "unreached." The Catholic church is already in a lot of these places, but of course that doesn't count to a lot of these groups.

A) Missionary work is a laudable thing, IMO. The work is typically hard and the intentions typically good.

B) Having known/encountered a lot of them, I understand the fundraising issue. I've given money to plenty of missionaries, and I've refused plenty too. A number of the latter category just struck me as people who saw it as a way to fund their dream, rather than pursue any specific call. The ones I'm prone to give to are the type where everything they have is already in the pot, and they need additional help.

C) Don't worry about their kids. The State Department and CIA are stocked with missionary kids. They'll get into great colleges too.
