The thread about the guy falling while climbing up into his stand make me think about how I climb in the stand with Tigerdeacon, Jr.

He just turned 5 and right now I only take him hunting on our food plots in the afternoons. However, he has started wanting to go in the mornings.

Right now I climb in and put all our stuff in the stand, climb down and then climb back up behind him while keeping an arm around him.

Any suggestions on a safer way? Is there a harness I can get to tether him to the ladder or to me? Seems like tethering him to me just doubles the chances that he might fall.

I do this but rope my gun into the stand when we are up there, saves 2 trips.

Looks like we are on dog duty the next week or so. Did you get the schedule?

I just climb up with him right in front of me. Be damn near impossible for him to fall without me grabbing him.

Nope - thanks for the warning, I was hoping we wouldn't volunteer for any of this foolishness so I could come and go as I please...oh well..

I do exactly what you do. It usually takes me about 3 trips to bring all of my girls' stuff up, especially when I'm taking 2 of them.

They have a whole schedule and everything. I think ya'll have most morning and we have the evenings.

Riley goes to Happy Tails when we are out of town - we will just take them there for the week, they will have more fun than being at home by themselves all day...

This is why we have a lab and a big fence. If we are gone, we just need someone to let him out in the morning and kennel him at night.

So far I've only hunted ground blinds with the little demons. I'm thinking of investing in a two man ladder stand for next year since they're getting big enough to make the climb. I plan on doing what has already been described, climbing up right behind them. I'll probably use the pull rope to get the gear in the tree instead of making an additional trip down/up.

That's what my pops did for me. I'll do the same for my daughter when she's old enough to tag along.

When I was about 9, my younger brother started hunting with my Pop and I. He couldn't take us together because we fought too much. I'd climb up some nails in a tree, to a wooden seat in a forked tree. Pop would come up and tie me to the tree with a yellow rope harness he made himself. He'd then go down and retrieve the gun. Bring it up to me, load it, and tell me not to shoot any does (1980s deer hunting philosophy I think).

so the kid is vulnerable to swoopedia attacks when you climb up with your bag.
