Help me convince my wife that it's time to "cut the cord"

I know, I know. Another cut the cord thread. But I'm lazy at the moment, the search sux, and I'm on my lunch break.

I've been sick of paying WAY too much for tv and Internet for the longest time so I've been trying to convince my wife to get rid of tv all together but she's too worried about "missing her shows". Give me your ultimate "cut the cord" setup so I can ditch these bastards.

I currently have 2 Apple TVs, an RPi running XBMC, and access to my parents' login so that I can get access to HBOgo, Watch ESPN, etc. We hardly watch live TV anymore and the only time that we do is when there is nothing DVR'd. The only thing I'm "worried" about would be accessing any new shows on the networks, namely anything on CBS (BBT, CSI, etc). It looks like most of everything else would be covered through one of my other devices. I'm just looking for that next step to make sure I can watch everything i want to.

I'm in the same boat, and I don't think ditching cable is doable unless there is an alternative way to catch all the trashy cable shows when they're new/live. My wife watches some of the worst shows on television.

My wife use to be that way, then we moved. I moved first to start my job and lived in an apartment with just internet. She sold the house and then came down once our new house was built.

I just decided to never purchase a TV plan. I had my gig service setup and just said frick TV. She asked me about it one day and I said I wasn't getting it and it was a waste of money. She pitched a huge fit, but I ended up holding my ground and told her to pay for it from the money she makes from her job if she wants it bad enough. She decided it wasn't worth her own money and learned to work the AppleTVs and Rokus that we have in the house. She watches old versions of those crap shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and whatever apps she can get access to from her parents cable account.

I ended up switching from uverse internet to cox's internet (50Mbps) with flex tv. Came with one (12+ yo) box that I ended up putting in the closet because it's garbage. It can access on demand and HBO (came free*) but it's infuriatingly slow. Ran cable straight to all of my tvs and get all of the basic channels in SD and the local channels in HD.

Apparently I had lied to you about uverse offering 48Mbps so after my special pricing was over I made the switch. Was paying $74± for uverse (24Mbps) and with cox I pay about the same for the first 12 months, $85± for the next 12 and then the contract ends and the price goes back to like $120 or something stupid.

Why don't you ask the question you really want the answer to: "How do I watch the Real House Wives on Apple TV?"

On Roku and probably AppleTV you can get the USTV channel and use a proxy to watch "her shows". Or you can watch them on Hulu Plus using a buddy or relatives cable login info.

I've not tested this but you also might try this addon for XBMC LINK

You should just buy the cable for her before she starts to spend her spare time boning the neighbor's teenage son.

If that's all you're worried about, just buy a decent antenna. You'll get all your broadcast shows that way. Can you use the Raspberry Pi as a DVR with an external HD? If so you could even DVR those shows as they come on.

If you've got a dish up on the roof you've even got the mount and won't have to do anything other than take the dish off and mount the antenna to the mast. We did it two years ago and haven't looked back, especially since we got a WatchESPN login from the fam.

Did this six months ago and haven't looked back. I consolidated all my network gear in an upstairs closet. Antenna is in the attic and picks up more than 20 channels. HD HomeRun tuners and Windows Media Center provide a slick user interface and program guide that are the match of cable or U-Verse. DVR works beautifully. An X-Box 360 console and a Roku box at each TV complete the package. Total cost per month is $62 for internet service plus $7.99 for Hulu Plus. I already had Amazon Prime.

What neighborhood are you in again? I know Uverse does have a 45mbps plan, but it's just not available everywhere. I'd assume newer developments would have it, but I live in North Woods (very old neighborhood) and I figure it'll be a long time before U-verse upgrades here, or never. As it stands now I can get 18mbps through U-verse, or 100+ through cox.

Tell her you want to cut the cord. If she says no, then, kill her. Profit.

Close to the old middle school.

I had the 18 and was able to get up to 24 with them running an additional line. When they described it to me I guess I assumed I'd be able to bump up to 45.

Like I said, I ended up going with an internet package that essentially gives me free basic cable and double the internet speed I had with uverse for the same price. I still have the antenna connected to a network adapter so I can record shows on the local stations to my plex server.

Looks like the HD-HR-Prime might be exactly what we would need for the network shows at least. I'm sure I would be able to set up the RPi to somehow integrate with it. Did I read that right, that I can connect an HD antenna to it and it will pick that up without needing a cable connection or will I need to get a cable card for it?

Now I just need to see what my best option would be to get "her shows" (read "the crappy reality shows on small cable channels that melt your eyeballs")

i cut the cord in 2008 or 2009. Sports is the only problem I have run into but my wife isn't white trash and doesn't watch reality tv.

My wife's not white trash but she certainly enjoys the trash. Here's some of shittier shite she catches each week:

Teen Mom
Teen Mom 2
16 and Pregnant
Marriage Boot Camp on WE
True Tori
Ink Master (I watch it too)
Are You the One
Hell's Kitchen
Little Women in LA
Every Baking-related Competition Ever Made

She says I should be grateful she doesn't watch Jersey Shore and related spin-offs, Kardashians, or Real Housewives.

Sounds like your wife and mine would get along pretty well. It's a good thing I didn't marry her for her taste in TV shows.

They make two models. One accepts either an antenna or an unencrypted cable connection and the other requires a card from the cable company.
