My father-in-law is offering to give me his pop-up camper for free if I obtain a vehicle that can tow it. It weighs around 2000 pounds I believe.

I have a car that I barely drive right now as I can walk to most places in town. In two years though, I may be somewhere that requires more driving.

I'm thinking about a Honda CRV, but honestly, I don't know much about trucks or SUVs.

What kind would you recommend on a low budget? What mileage would you say is too high for purchase? I've found a Honda CRV with 120k miles for $5k.

CRV is not a great tow vehicle. Find a used pickup truck or body-on-frame SUV like a Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, or the older Ford Explorer. Also look at the XTerra or a Jeep Liberty would do for a lighter load like that as well. 4Runner is good if you can find one.

Remember, your gear will add up. If the camper is 2,000, you should probably anticipate a load up to 3200 lbs for a camping trip. That's well beyond what the older CR-V or Rav4 can safely do.

V4.

We're also planning on having more children in the near future, so extra seats are desired. Pickup truck will have too small of a cab.

I wouldn't buy a $6K vehicle just to tow a $2K used popup a few times a year.

Screw a CRV. Get you a 6-cylinder Tacoma. They last forever and you can get a decent one for 6K.

If you just plan on pulling the camper, you can get a early 2000's F-150 or late 90's F-250 for around 6K

I'm going to sell my 2006 Honda Accord.

We have a 2009 Nissan Altima with less than 100k miles. That's what we mainly drive. The Accord isn't being used much right now.

3rd generation 4Runner, 1996-1998 specifically for that price range.

Yea but not safely. Get something that isn't rated for it and you'll burn up the transmission.

4Runner is definitely catching my fancy.

Hopefully I can sell the Accord for a good price. It has 110k miles and is a 2006.

According to Autotrader, I could possibly list it for $10k and it'd be a deal. That'd help with buying the SUV.
