GF wants to get me a 1911 for Christmas. I'll probably do the buying though, and I may add on to her contribution to get something nicer.

I'm leaning Commander size, and my starting point was the SR1911 CMD. Still may get it, that's the one she decided to get me (but note, she has no attachment to it, she won't care at all if I get something else).

But I'm willing to consider anything up to 1200 or so, so what in that range should I look at? FWIW, I'm not a fan of Kimber, although I know things have apparently improved and I could be convinced.

Ultimately I think the question will be whether anything in that range is worth it to me as an improvement over the Ruger. Right now I feel like the step up to make it really worth my while will probably come closer to 1500.

i've had similar thoughts, i really like the ruger sr1911 but was wondering if there was anything else maybe close in price range but a little more "unique" with most of same type features and style.

Any of the Dan Wesson's in that price range are awesome. You could probably get ablesser model Les Baer which is still awesome for $1500. A Les Baer is about half the cost of Wilson but it in no way is it half the gun. Basically, Les Baer or Dan Wesson and you will be extremely happy.

Well shite. I love mine. It's really a smooth shooter, smooth trigger and little muzzle raise.

I just got a Ruger Commander. I'm a Ruger fan boy though. I love the reliability for the price. Will own some nicer guns one day, but for now 3 of my 4 are Rugers.

i got my Dan Wesson Specialist from Jim's for around $1,450 (i think). I laid out the Kimber Warrior, TRP, Operator, and the Specialist and literally went from one to the other and back down the line handling each. None were even in the same ball park as the Specialist. the fit is seamless, the movement is so smooth and the trigger is silly good (like nighthawk good). the thing eats any ammo i put through it and runs like a sowing machine. the sights took a little getting used to (they are the triji i dot (one on top of the other) but i actually really like them after putting about 1,200 rds through the gun. it had one malfunction on round 78 when the first time i shot it where the slide didn't lock up completely into battery but hasn't hiccuped since.

so to answer your question, i think you are correct in your assumption that you will see a larger improvement in the $1,500 range, although the TRP, Warrior, & Operator were all within $200 of each other yet far more inferior to the Wesson.

I want a DW but I don't think I can get what I want for less than 1200. Maybe, but it'll take some work. I'm going to look though, and I'd consider used.

I'd love a Baer but I have a hard time believing I could get one for under 1500, and I don't really want to go higher. I will likely own higher end 1911s in the future, so I guess that should factor in too.

I agree with Tiddles on the Dan Wesson, I have shot his and it is worth every penny. I got a Kimber Custom II 10 years ago (before the quality issues that are supposedly getting better). It has run flawlessly and is very smooth. I also have some range time with the Springfield Operator, which is nice. If you don't want to spend $1500 on the Dan Wesson, look at the Kimber Warrior or the Springfield Operator. You will be pleased with any of those 3.

any reason you want commander size? i haven't shot one in a really long time but i think they can be quite a bit more snappy than govt length. still not a bad as officer though

For that price range I would be looking at the Dan Wesson Valor if you don't want a Kimber.

Dan Wesson Specialist

A friend has one of these. I had the privilege of shooting a few rounds from it, and I have to say it is probably one of the nicest pistols I have ever shot and will ever shoot. He also has a TRP, the TRP is nice but the difference is noticeable IMHO.

I thought they were around the $1600 range. If they are $1450 and you are willing to go to $1200 maybe just look at Specialist. The $250 won't make that big of a difference on a pistol you will keep for the rest of you life, and trust me you will keep it for the rest of your life.

V-Bob is what I want, but I'd probably have to move to 1500 to get one.

Yes you will. The cheapest Dan Wesson is a RZ-45. I don't think they come in commander length though.

I also like the commander E Series from S&W in Black. I think it's scandium or something like that. I think it's around 1k.
