Now that I'm getting into my shed, I'm looking for a tool chest to store all my hand tools. I've amassed quite a bit over the years (mostly long-term borrowed from my dad's tool box...) but they've always been stored on a peg board in my garage or various small hand tool boxes. I did some searching not knowing my budget and feel comfortable with $300-$400 for a combo top and bottom being a good range.

The issue I'm having is do I go quality (craftsman, etc...) but in 27" width or size (no-name brand) in 40" width. I'm not against starting with a 40" bottom but none of the better brands have even a 40" that's less than $500.

Thoughts/reviews/recomendations?

I like Craftsman, however I still like to have pegboard too for wrenches, hammers and that sort of stuff. I just find a lot of stuff gets moved to the wrong spot in the chest, so I use both.

With your budget, Harbor Freight. I know they're brands can be hit and miss, but their tool chests seem solid and well-reviewed.

Harbor Freight. The 44" Industrial is a solid base and is right at your price range. Goes on sale all of the time. It gets great reviews and is used heavily by alot of the people on GarageJournal.

I saw a Kirklands branded one in Costco. With their warranty backing plus their quality, that would be a win in my book.

Costoc is a good choice as well. Very similar to the HF box.

Here are some pics of a clean setup with the Costco boxes. Said they were $320 each.

I went with the harbor freight one, 44" top and bottom.

Bottom was $389, top was $289. They didn't have the top new in box so I got the display for baaically nothing. Walked out right at $500.

Btw, that store is ridiculous. I think if you follow reviews online and don't plan on making a living with some of their tools, you can save a ton of money.

That's the one I got. It feels as quality as my dad's craftsman ones and the ones at lowes.
