No doubt but they arent psychic. Its one thing if Gandalf does it, hes a wizard, but Legolas is a little over the top.

Orcs and Goblins have to be the most useless fricking fighters in the history of the world. The way they kill them in this series makes me wonder why anyone in Middle Earth would ever be scared of them?

went and saw it last night. Only ten people in the theater. at Malco. I expected much more even though it was 8:20 showing.
I thought it was good entertainment but the work itself was average. I think someone had it right. They were stretching two movies into three.
Thorin's turn to the "dark side" was nicely done. I agree that the movie uses too much CGI. The commander in LOTR was much more realistic and had more character than that stupid CGI villain.
At least we didn't have barrel riding and escaping from the goblins scenes. The gymnastics while crossing that falling tower actually made me laugh, they were so stupid.
Please Game of Thrones, don't start using CGI.

The fact that orcs cant kill women and children makes me seriously question Sauron's choice in soldiers.
Did he really think he could conquer middle earth with THESE guys?

Orcs and Goblins have largely relied on massive numbers and no regard for life. They breed like crazy and their commanders will throw as many as possible at their enemy without a care as to how many orcs or goblins die.

This probably the silliest argument. "Too much CGI." People who liked silent movies thought talkies had "too much talking." I am sure there were people who hated Star Wars for "too much special effects."
The CGi men under the mountain in Lord of the Rings was not great, especially when they poured through Minas Tirith.
I thought the CGI was perfect in the Hobbit. Azog and Bolg both looked bad arse. Smaug was perfect - or would you rather the dragon/dog from Neverending Story?

Dragon was my favorite scenes. I think with CGI the director can fall into the trip of being in love with the technique itself instead of using it as a tool to tell a story.

Smaug and Golem were the only two cgi characters that looked good in the series. Watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy again today and there really isn't much comparison. It's 50x better in every respect.

The 3-D experience was weird. First time for me. Eyes felt like they got a workout at the end of the movie.

Saw it today. My thoughts:
1. Orcs, even these which are "bred for battle", are still the worst fighters and are ridiculously easy to kill.
2. Eagles still turn up to save the day. When they feel like it. Kind of a deus ex thing there.
3. The love story between the gorgeous elf and the dwarf was unnecessary and unbelievable. Not that believability is important, I suppose.
4. Bilbo is by far the most interesting and charismatic hobbit of any of the movies. So much better than watching Frodo.
5. The humans (the refugees who made themselves into an army) in the movie seemed unnecessary. After the battle I don't think the movie even bothered to show what became of them. As far as I know, they were still homeless, hungry, and injured. I guess they got the gold though?
6. This was the campiest of them all. There were some real terrible moments that were straight out of a 90s popcorn movie.

The CGI was fine. If overused, it can create a world that's too smooth and artificial looking, but I didn't really get that feel here. The orcs looked great.

Sounds about like I expected. It seems that the Hobbit series has been geared much more toward children than adults.
The Hobbit book is really a kids book. The source material here is the problem. Not enough meat for a trilogy and not as epic in scale as LOTR.

I enjoyed the hell out of it. These books/movies are a door to another world where all the things we wished we can do as kids are possible and the good guy wins. Yes they were stretched out, but I didn't care. Had fun watching all 6 of the franchise though reading, as usual, was better.

TBH, I don't really like the Hobbit book. For me the movies are better

Freeman's portrayal gets overlooked amongst all the complaints, but I agree. He was very good in all 3 movies.

Agreed.
No one can come away from these movies without appreciation for his work in the film.

I also thought that Armitage was very good as Thorin. After watching him in Robin Hood I couldn't make my eyes believe that was the same actor.
Mckellen was delivered his normal as Gandalf, but as he said pre movie. It's like putting on an old coat to go back into that role.

I just got back from watching it, and it was ok. The actual battle's end was about has anticlimactic as I could've imagined. Gandalf made such a big deal about the second army coming from the north, yet they spent what, 5 minutes showing it getting attacked by eagles and the man-bear? They didn't even show it being defeated. I was hoping to see the elves change their minds and come to the aid of the dwarves, but I guess that wasn't the case.
I did like the opening fight sequence with Smaug. I also loved the opening of the battle when the dwarves and elves are about to go at it, then they see the orc army coming for them, and without hesitation the dwarves marched. Then when it appeared that the elves weren't going to march, and the dwarves took their position, the elves start hurdling over the dwarf shields, that was pretty darn bad arse. The maneuvering of the dwarf army was pretty cool when they were moving like a Roman legion. But there just wasn't enough of that, especially at the end when the second orc army arrived. And I'm not sure what purpose the humans served. I wanted to see more of the battle showing the elf and dwarf armies fighting as units, not fighting as individuals.
I would love to see a movie or series of movies about the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. I would love to see a battle that had a true human army, true elf army, and true dwarf army fighting Sauron in his physical form and his army. But I guess the CGI complainers wouldn't care for it.
Overall it was ok and entertaining. But it could've been a lot better.
