I was thinking about getting my wife (no pics) some photography classes for a Christmas present. We're on our second Canon D-SLR and she has the external flash, and a variety of lenses for it already, mostly from the first canon we had. She likes to think she knows what she's doing, but it mostly involves her playing around with the settings and taking a bunch of pictures and seeing how they look. She mentioned taking a class before, and I thought it would make a great present. Give her something to do to get out of the house and she might actually learn something so when she tries to take pics it isn't 10 minutes of her futzing around with the camera and eventually trying to take a pic of the kids, well after they have lost interest.

So has anyone taken classes that teach the basics, mainly all of the shutter speed, ISO, manual mode settings, etc? Was it worth it? If so I'll take a deeper look at what I found here. And a bonus, if you've taken classes in or around Birmingham and can direct me somewhere, I'd appreciate it.

I haven't taken the class, but Jefferson State offers two levels of photography class.

ETA - I was mistaken. They have a ton of photography classes through the community education program.

Sweet. That 6 week $99 class looks perfect. I think if she just went to one or two classes she wouldn't get anything out of it.

You can try online one.
It doesn't have to be an oldschool photography school. There are now quite a few online.
