I don't give a darn about the smartest. We had a poodle, hated that dog. Got a Yorkie for my daughter. It became my right hand man for 6 1/2 years then died.

Humans and dogs have been teaming up to live/hunt together for over 100,000 years. The "Human-Canine Bond" is something not many scientists understand, but it is strong. It wouldn't surprise me if some part of their brain was evolved to be able to learn some basic human language.

I would say border collie, however I had a Cocker Spaniel that was very smart, could teach him to do just about anything! He knew about 15 toys by name and would bring the newspaper inside each morning--just to name a couple! Great dog!

I picked u a stray Beagle/Shepherd mix in October. That dog is the smartest I've ever seen. We've had multiple Australian shepherds and at less than a year old, he's smarter than any of them ever were. We also have a Lab/Boxer mix that is incredibly dumb. But, she's the most loyal dog I've ever seen.

My Portuguese Water Dog is pretty smart.
He's is very human like and "handsy". If he wants something, he will literally use his paw to tap you - not paw at you, but tap you.
He will hug you, too.
We are getting a lab puppy on Friday for Christmas. Hope she's not a dumbass.

Definitely not my lemon basset.
The tricolor may be smart. He figures out how to get what he wants with as little energy and effort output as possible. You can see him thinking it out sometimes. Lazy bastard.
