Used to have one. Much different from a Collie. Highly intelligent & trainable. That dog was almost human. Adored her. We're about to get another. Seriously smart. They just shed like a mofo. Gotta constantly brush them.

That's where I'm out. I can't spend days brushing a dog

Well, they're not exactly tall. ... But they're bred to herd, so they're extremely agile.

Own an aussie/catahoula mix. Genius of a dog. Although super fricking stubborn

The objectively smartest dog ever was a Border Collie.

Maybe you guys can suggestion a breed. We have 3 younger children - 2 girls & a boy. The girls are fine around dogs but the boy likes to rough house with them like he's the alpha. It's rare but he has been bit. He just fusses at the dog but once he bit my in laws dog back. Funniest shite I've seen.
I'm thinking sturdy, laid back but with a bit of playfulness. It's been along time since I've had a dog just looking for a direction.

Beagles would be pretty high up there if they weren't wired to latch on to a fricking scent and be willing to die to find it's origin. Our Beagle is one of the smartest dogs I've ever been around but his nose makes him one stubborn sonofabitch. Non-Beagle owners that aren't used to them might call them dumb when they don't come or whatever but it's just how they're made. They can't help it.

Golden Retriever. They are the perfect personality for kids. I have two and the neighbor kids climb all over them. They love it.

I've owned Chesapeakes and Labs . Both are very smart . The smartest dog I've ever owed is a Border Collie / Catahoula mix . I can talk to it like a human and I swear it understands . I've had several total strangers comment on just how smart he is . I think it has a lot to do with the handler .

This was my Great Dane when I was at LSU. Not very bright, but more of a "bro" than any other dog I've had.

Pretty common they found with Borders at least. They can understand some sentence structure and concepts like the difference between Proper nouns and nouns.
