I am asking for any advice of what may be wrong with my outboard motor. It is an older model 6 hp Johnson. It always starts and usually runs like a top. I use it for duck hunting in flooded timber so you can imagine the trash it encounters. The flooded timber is pretty thick so I just putt through it at quarter or half throttle.

The problem started a couple of years ago. Occasionally the motor will make a strange noise and white smoke will pour out of it. I can't describe the noise. It is not a hissing or a clattering or a grinding noise The smoke does not have a burning smell so it actually may be steam.

The water pump is working just fine. After several seconds the noise and smoke quits. It happens so randomly. It may not do it while motoring out but may do it a few times while motoring back. Temperature does not seem to be a factor since it will do it whether it is cold or warm.

Any suggestions by the OBers? Thanks in advance.

ETA: I forgot to mention that the motor shut down twice during these episodes. The first time was a couple of years ago and the second time was earlier this season. It was like the motor was seized since I could not pull on the pull rope. After some time the pull rope loosened up so that I could start it again. I had the water pump replaced a few weeks ago just to be sure water was pumping at its maximum and the mechanic said the compression on the cylinders was fine.

Yes meauxjeaux...it looks just like it. It has always been very dependable starting and running. And it still is except for these random episodes. I keep motoring when these episodes occur but it is unnerving and I don't know if I am damaging the old girl in doing so.

you got a cylinder dropping out. Probably a bad plug wire. The smoke you're seeing is unburnt fuel/oil exiting out of the exhaust everytime it misfires.
I'd start off changing plugs and wires. If that don't do it you may have a trigger or power pack going bad.shite, that things so old it may not have a power pack.May have a points type ignition.

Hey gumbeaux, you might have a bad head gasket. My 1977 35hp evinrude was acting almost the same. Rough idle hard to crank, backfire, would puff a little white smoke (steam)also. It finally went caput about 2 miles out in lake p and could never get it fired back up. come to find out it had a bad head gasket. Just thought I would run that by you. Hopefully its a simple fix like meauxjeaux suggested!! He is pretty good with the older outboards!!

Thanks troutsman and meauxjeaux! I will look into it. It does not idle rough or is hard to crank like you described troutsman. It starts and runs fine....it is just these random episodes that last several seconds a few times each hunt. I was wondering if somehow water was getting into places it shouldn't for a brief period of time resulting is this strange noise and steam. These has been going on for a couple of years now.
