Sign up for Amazon Mom, it's free. Use the subscribe and save and you will save somewhere between 20-30% on these items (20% for Amazon Mom and 15% for subscribe and save with 5 items).

If you are short the 5 items, add house cleaning supplies or something you go through at a steady pace and just rotate them through the months. Dog food, and coffee are usually my fillers.

Thank you everyone for your responses. We are very excited and I am even more excited for my wife not to have pregnancy emotions anymore. She reads too much stuff on the internet which makes her think she's doing something wrong.

We already are part of Amazon Prime/Mom but I know nothing about the advantages of it. My wife signed up for it and she told me some of the features of it. I'll look more into it so I understand it completely.

Thanks again everyone. Happy Holidays.

Congrats!

One thing I didn't consider with our first born when I was planning our budget was our dining out expenses were cut drastically. Whereas we went out for dinner 3-4 nights a week before kids, it went down to maybe once a month after kids.

And if your wife is staying home, double your expenses for clothes, baby supplies, etc. Women get bored and when they get bored, they like to shop.

Wow, never realized how expensive formula is. I nursed both of mine for just over a year. I can understand it being a problem if mom is going back to work but really made life simple for me and my little ones. My mom discouraged me but I had a great pediatrician that was very encouraging to nurse. It is difficult at first. I came down with mastitis but managed to get through it and it worked out well. Mine are both college grads now and doing well. Absolutely love spending time with them. Time passes so quickly...enjoy them!

....Don't go overboard on toys and clothes. I did and boy did we garage sale tons of things. Also make sure you stay involved in their education and encourage them to be responsible young people. Mine have been pretty good at managing money from early on. Congrats and best of luck to all of you young parents!

Medical costs - I ended up owing my out of pocket max after an emergency C-section and a couple of days in the NICU, then the calendar flipped to 2014 and there were all the checkups/shots, a few quick trips to the doctor because your wife (or yourself) will be freaking out about every little thing, and an ER trip thrown in along the way.

You're probably underestimating the cost of formula once the little one starts on that. I recommend going with the generic brand, but if you prefer the name brand, you can find coupons out there for Similac or Enfamil all the time. The day we were able to switch to whole milk was a joyous day for the wallet.

Diapers - you're going to need a lot of them. Estimate more than what you're currently estimating.

The biggest expense you can expect off the pre delivery is crib, stroller, car seat, other furniture.

We asked people to go in on big gifts, not get small stuff. Our parents combined to buy us crib. Friends pooled money for stroller and car seats. Just that saved us a grand.

Our additional monthly expenses now with 5 month old:

Daycare- 750
Insurance- 150
daipers/wipes- 75
529- 100
Babysitter twice a month - 100
Doctors visits- 30

About to go to formula and that'll be another 100/MO most likely.

Be careful with the formula stuff. It can be much much more expensive than you think.

A lot of babies need certain formulas and sometimes require medicine for reflux (very common).

Our little girl requires Prilosec compound solution which is around 40 bucks from the HSA account one every 4 or 5 weeks. She is also on Nutramagin, which costs about 40 bucks for a 6 day supply.

You have not seen hell until you've seen what a child on Nutramagin can do to a diaper....pray you don't find out...

ETA: Get your wife, MIL, Mother, everyone you can to go to baby websites for Pampers, Huggies, various types of formula, etc etc. They will send tons of free stuff and coupons. Our daughter is almost 3 months and I think we have bought diapers once due to coupons and free stuff.

People say you will dine out less - this is true - but you will also be so tired you won't ever want to cook. We ate a lot of take out in those first few months

This. If you don't have family helping out, cooking in the evening is often the last thing you want to do. We did not go out much with a newborn, but we ordered out a ton.

I need to work on my social skills.

How do you ask people to do this without it feeling socially awkward?

My kids are teenagers so I don't really try to control these types of things.

PICTURES ARE ANOTHER HUGE EXPENSE. There are photographers who specialize in baby pictures and women spend big money on portraits. My house looks like a museum to the American Baby.

One good money/time saver is to start cooking about 3 mos before her due date. Lay in a big ol freezer supply of things you both like: chili, meat sauce, soups, red beans, etc. Make big batches and freeze in 3-4 portion containers, which defrost quicker. Rather than takeout, you can "take out" of the freezer. Some folks take comfort in the "if it's Tuesday, it must be chili night" dining routine. Can be comforting if y'all are too tired/busy to cook, and it certainly is the most economical way to manage a household.

It is also way healthier than a steady diet of takeout (important consideration if breastfeeding is in the picture).

#1 thing is to get on daycare waiting lists and pay deposit yesterday.... All the good ones are usually full and you don't want to send him to a crappy daycare. I bet daycare in Chicago is over 1,000 a month. We lived in DC when ours was born and daycare was 1500$... We moved to Williamsburg though and pay about 750$ here thank The Lord

It's kind of a common practice amongst my friends and family to go in with each other for big gifts for weddings and baby showers.

The big stuff is usually more meaningful and rememberable.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES

It has really gotten crazy. Themes, catered food, destination parties, etc.

When I was a kid, it was cake and candles with my parents and brother.

Now it's invitations, expensive food, entertainment, etc.

Thankfully, my wife never got the urge to go to a professional except for newborn pics. My sister, on the other hand, is on her 2nd one and she did quarterly photo sessions for both of her kids.
