Hundreds?
That may well be the biggest understatement on the PTB this month.

I think you missed the word "available". Most doctors in this country have no desire to get involved in such a quagmire for a short-term appointment, especially when a condition of that position would be a requirement to openly support the Affordable Care Act. I'll stick with "hundreds".

Something other than than a 37y/o who I'd not trust to care for a patient. To be crystal clear, if given the choice for my family's care, I'd choose a random doctor taken from the yellow pages over Vivek Murthy.

In terms of US physicians, this man is a nobody.

Significant controversy at some point in the next two years, when it's just not necessary. The Surgeon General position is a public trust of sorts and should not involve the selection of someone who brings an outspoken political agenda to the job.

Think Minnie Lee Jones (aka Joycelyn Elders) and her firing by Bill Clinton after sticking both feet in her mouth at the same time and embarrassing his administration. A serious individual who commands respect for the masses he/she must serve is the only way to go.

Guns are a health problem.

There are more accidental deaths from them than necessary. That makes it a health issue since the NRA can't seem to get its own members to secure guns around kids.

This gentleman has no particular expertise in the field.
By your criterion, Gabby Giffords would be a FAR BETTER choice for USSG.

I'm pretty sure the fit that Ted Cruz and Mike Lee threw the other night had a lot to do with this happening.

You trust Reid at his word? Because you'd have to to believe that is true.

It certainly didn't help. That was a bad political maneuver and was not well thought out in advance. I wrote in this forum on Saturday that they had gifted the Dems on this one, and The Hill had a story today (2 days later) making that very point. One has to pick one's battles carefully and not give in to spur-of-the-minute whims. I have always liked Mike Lee but he really peed on his own shoes with that move.

If that's true, and you can't see that gun deaths are a PUBLIC health issue, you did a terrible job.

Isn't Murthy the guy who wants to regulate gun ownership as a health issue?

So you're the one who told Elders to endorse the legalization of Mary Jane?

Terrible advice at the time, doc.

On the list of "Public Health Issues," guns aren't even top 20.

If true....damn strong retort.

Not doubting you, but this is the internet. I might be a real life crackhead.

According to this report from 2011, homicides rank from 8th (African-Americans) to 18th (whites) among causes of death. Yes, that includes other causes of death from assault, but it's clearly in the list of things we should be looking at reducing.

To suggest otherwise is to misunderstand the discussion.

Are cars a public health problem?

How about buckets, a leading cause of death among young children?

Do you know anything about the NRA's gun safety programs?

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but yes. https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/index.html
