USL has very low volume.

Concerning USO, DBO is about 50% down too, and I bet it tracks closer on the ride back up.

USO will suffer decay more than DBO will because USO is not managed. I don't know the ins and outs of contango and backwardation, but I know 1) it's not a good thing. 2) DBO attempts to reduce its impact.

This was written just a week ago. Most of the stuff I've read was from several years ago so I'm glad to see this:

quote:

Many oil ETFs hold oil futures contracts, which often have an underlying hidden cost that results from something called "contango". This can cause these ETFs to vastly underperform the actual change in the price of oil. This article provides ongoing estimates of this cost for three of the more popular oil ETFs: USO (United States Oil ETF), USL (United States 12 Month Oil ETF), and DBO (PowerShares DB Oil ETF).

A more in depth read...apparently DBO isn't everything I thought it was? We'll know in a couple years.

The eye test is what made me like IXC so much more. Having BP, TOT, RDS, and KMI in the top 10 are a huge eye popper for me.

Having BP probably also hurt the 5 and 10yr returns because VDE does not contain BP at all.

You still leaning VDE after your research? I have a Fidelity account so there would be no commission for IXC (I think)

I lean VGENX, but that's a mutual fund.

There's nothing wrong with IXC, and having BP could actually help in the long run (because it's comically low)...and you're right, IXC wins by just glancing at the holdings IMO.
Also, I don't like that VDE is 1/5 XOM...can't go wrong with either though.

Aside: can someone go all in on Petrobras or Eni and let us know how it turns out?

YES! I don't know what today was...maybe anticipation of the Yellen speech today? I don't pretend to know about "the fed"

Think we are close enough that it will not make a huge difference. That is IMHO only. My thoughts are that oil is going to get a small bounce back to the mid 60's as fear subsides and settle out therabouts. Again these are my thoughts, not sure enough to mortgage the house or anything.

ERX may turn out to be the better play but who knows

I'll be kicking myself I didn't pull the trigger on CVX at $100

Meh, if I kicked myself for every lost opportunity I would have worn my feet out by now.

Sold my DWTI. Owned it since the OPEC meeting where they decided not to cut production.

Not ready to get into UWTI yet so I'm on the sidelines.

Yellen's "can be patient" "considerable time" with rate hikes sparked a rally, so I believe this is just some near term short covering. I don't think we are close to declaring a bottom in oil yet.

Well where do you think it will be if we are not close?

I don't necessarily mean numerically but I don't think we are there yet either. It will not be a V-shape bottom and rally so only time will tell.

This is what I'd like to believe.
