How does the movie Das Boot hold up to the book?

I loved the book and have read it a couple of times over the years (though it has been awhile).

For some reason I've never caught the movie. I think it was well received but has it held up? Any thoughts on it? Does it measure up to the book?

I've never read the book, but I believe that Das Boot is the greatest war film ever made, so I'd guess... pretty well.

Is awesome, regardless of the book.

How is the book?

The movie is an amazing dramatic classic.

Watch the movie and tell us how it relates to the book.

The book was terrific. Lots of action/suspense, good dose of philosophy, even a little debauchery.

I'll see if I can watch the movie and give a comparison for the board.

That's high praise. Because the book was pretty damned good.

I didn't even know there was a book. The movie is amazing, one of the top war movies ever.

I read Iron Coffins which is a GREAT book and some say provides a lot of foundation for Das Boot which is a GREAT movie.

Two different mediums. Cannot be compared fairly. That being said, the movie is great.

I guess the real question is which version of the movie needs to be seen. Isn't there a super long version.

I always try to watch the longest version for every movie. More often than not, that is the version the director really wanted.

I think the original was a miniseries. The theatrical release chopped a ton out.

I think I've only seen the movie release so I probably need to give the German mini-series release a watch one day.
