I'm looking into buying a new mattress in Q1 2015 and I need some advice.

My s/o has lower back pain on our mattress because it is too soft so we are looking into either a hybrid mattress or the sleep number system.

I come to the OT to benefit from you infinite wisdom

TIA

a lot of people will suggest tempur-pedic.

the worst $3000 i ever spent. i wake up with a backache every time i sleep on it. I now sleep on the mattress we replaced with the tempur-pedic.

Just bought a Serta iComfort that I really like. Was convinced going in I'd end up with a TempurPedic, but I liked this just as much and it was half the price.

Serta iComfort did the trick for us. My money well spent.

We have a mid level Tempur Pedic from about 2 years ago. We really like it. People say that they sleep "hot" and I had a friend return one for one with the gel top because of that but I have not had a problem. The only time it may seem hot to me is if i have been laying in it a few hours before sleeping. So many bed choices these days. Although I have heard all the mechanisms in the Sleep Number can go out and that they are just a glorified air mattress. I'm sure someone will come in here and refute that so YMMV.

Another caveat, whatever you buy find a small independent store and bring CASH. Bed business is competitive and there is a huge mark up.

I'll never own another Serta. I paid $1800 for the set, and the damn thing fell apart a year after we bought it. The memory foam top is completely compressed and the fabric on the bottom of the mattress tears. All the threads holding the side fabric to the bottom unraveled. No one would ever notice with sheets on the bed, but it aggravates me.

Replaced under warranty, but now the replacement is doing the same damn thing after a few years. At 180 lbs., it's not like I'm a fatass wearing the damn thing out.

Bought a Serta Valleybrook "firm" from SAMS. Paid 600 for it. Bought it after i herniated a disc in my lower back. That thing has been outstanding! They had 3 levels of firmness and went with the mid-level. Had it for about 8 months and have had zero issues.

Somebody on an old mattress thread mentioned they bought a Tuft & Needle mattress. I bought a king a few months ago and have been very happy. Can't beat the price - $600. Bought a $100 frame on Amazon. Full 10 year warranty.
