I think there are a couple examples already of MLS clubs and their growing academies paying off. Both Yedlin and Zardes are good studies of "elite" American athletes going through a system and properly learning the game. If MLS and US soccer continue to improve and put money into development we will see even more homegrown talent rise.

And for the people who complain about better athletes don't play soccer, ask Kobe, who grew up playing soccer in Spain, just how elite he was at soccer.......

the premise of your entire argument is "if we put all our resources" which again is ridiculous, as other wealthy countries put their entire resources into the sport with paltry results. What makes you think that America could do better than England? Or Norway? Or Sweden? Or France? Or the Netherlands?

Jesus Christ man. What makes me think that? Maybe because we have exponentially more sporting resources than all of those countries combined.

Then why hasn't Belgium been good forever?

My point is that they radically changed their system from the national team all the way down to the youth clubs. That's how they became great.

No, they got lucky that a bunch of immigrants moved there who were better athletes than their native, Belgian counterparts. A couple of generations later, boom, Belgium has a world class national team full of racially diverse players.

If you really think that that's all that went into it, then there is really no point in continuing this.

We have way more immigrants than Belgium does. Too bad all those Mexicans are elite football and basketball players instead of becoming elite soccer players.

Not sure I've ever read a thread that has made me want to punch a puppy more than this one.

This is going nowhere. We are never going to agree on this.

You guys say I don't get it. I say you don't.

You guys think my argument is an over simplification. I think you guys are out-thinking the room.

I think you guys love the sport so much (as do I), and resent the love it doesn't get in America, that it can cloud the judgement and opinions of a bunch of smart dudes. And you think we suffer from American elitism. Which I will admit that I do. And it's because I believe we are better than them at everything we want to better than them at (Europe, Asia, whoever, all of them). So I choose to believe that if we cared about soccer the way they do, we would dominate, kind of how we do in most everything.

I'm tired of arguing. It's not like this shite really matters. There's too much good stuff on this board for me to be scrolling through 12 pages of this same old shite and getting angry over something pointless.

Can we please just all agree to go back to discussing games, posting funny shite and down voting any and every TNBhoy post.

Yep. I had a few links in mind to post about Belgium's resurgence, but they would literally do nothing for a couple of these jokers.

We disagree on this topic, but I respect and agree with most of what you say on here and appreciate that the arguments you direct towards another posters possibly differing opinion is done in a respectful, non-douchey manner. And you've had my back on here a couple times before in the past so thanks for that. Take care.

Oh relax. You are wrong because you just don't realize the way youth are trained, and how many good athletes already come through the system in numerous countries only to fail at the professional level. Athleticism is a great thing, and we could always use athletic players, but any reliance on athleticism over technique leads to players that rely on athleticism. If we want to produce a player like Thierry Henry, we have to emphasize the technical aspect of the game. That's what you don't understand. Follow the sport for some years and you'll see why all of us basically argue the same thing, that technique with the ball trumps athleticism without the ball all day.

You have no idea what you are talking about in this thread, and you know nothing about soccer in this country or any other. Frankly it's embarrassing that you insist on arguing this stupid, beaten-like-a-dead-horse point, against people who know more about this sport and its development than you ever, ever will.

horseshite...I don't find you respectful at all. You make assumptions about people because they disagree with your opinions? I know nothing about soccer? I'm sure I have spent more time on the pitch than you have dreamed of. I played soccer my whole life, played for 6 weeks on a traveling club in Holland/Belgium, and played 4 years of college soccer. Eat it, jackass.

Just some friendly advice to you going forward in life: I think it's healthy to have good debates on things that interest us...but when you take this elitist "I'm better than you; so, I'm right and you're wrong" attitude, generally people stop listening and respecting you.

Honest question: how can you claim to have spent so much time on a soccer pitch but still not know the fundamentals of player development? For the love of God I hope you're not involved in youth soccer in our country.

I'm intimately familiar with the deficiencies of our youth development. And, I understand why it won't change...that's where we disagree. Given the fact that I don't think it can change, my view is the only way to really compete is to have better athletes playing the sport. Again, this is merely hypothetical because that won't change either...for the same reason the youth development program won't change.

You guys just disagree. Fine. But there's no need to personally attack someone's knowledge of the sport.
