Have you seen any Montezuma's? I couldn't shoot one of them. Just too rare and gorgeous.

Gambel's on the other hand isn't very difficult at all in AZ; blast away.

Well done. Very pretty bird.

Do they taste like a bobwhite?

They looked like a bobwhite when cleaned, but I didn't get a chance to eat any as I left them with my hosts upon flying back home the next day.

We didn't see any of those, but we were in south AZ which might be out of their range?

Gambel's are relatively common out there but are an exotic bird for someone like me who has only hunted in the southeast. Hoping to make a return trip next year now that I have some experience with them.

The Montezuma is mostly in the south, south of Tucson. I've been lucky enough to see small flocks several times. My friends who are truly serious birders hate me for it. It's a VERY difficult bird to see and I've just been stupid lucky with it.

Gambel's Quail was good enough for me on my first birding trip there. When I saw the first I yelled at my wife "Gambel's fricking Quail!' The parents with young children were not amused at all. There is absolutely no better place to bird than SE Arizona. With all the Mexican species it's not even remotely close.

I used to kill the heck out of them in AZ. Had some of my best dove and quail hunts just outside of Phoenix.

Congrats, looks like a lot of fun and brings back a lot of memories for me.
