Gordon went off in his 2nd year dude.

ODBjr is doing it as a rookie. There is usualy a huge learning curve for rookie WRs and ODBjr has shite all over that curve

Dude is already at 71/972/9 in only 10 games. As a rookie. Let that sink in.

That makes Calvin Johnson's rookie year look silly. That's better than either of Dez Bryants's first two seasons. It took Jordy Nelson 4 seasons to be relevant. Julio Jones rookie year? Nope. Antonio Brown? Nope. Josh Gordon? Nope.

At this point he's only chasing AJ Green and Colston as far as rookie numbers go, and they did it in 15 and 14 games, respectively. He's almost surpassed them in 10 games.

The season Beckham is putting together is unprecedented. I don't think people realize what he's doing here

That's great, but the claim isn't "best rookie WR in the NFL", or even "best rookie year for a WR ever".

You can ask 5 different people who the best WR is in the NFL and get 5 different answers. People are splitting hairs when it comes to breaking down who they think is better.

There are only a handful of game changing WRs, and Beckham is in that category.

He is doing something unprecedented, but the game is clearly changing. AJ Green probably had the best rookie season in the past decade and Mike Evans will also eclipse that (in addition to Beckham). Through talent, reliance on these receivers, and an increased scoring environment have all made a huge difference.

There is almost no doubt that he will have the best (or at least one of the best) statistical seasons for a rookie in NFL history during the Super Bowl era. I think some dude back in 1960 had stupid numbers.

However, the title of this thread said:

quote:

Odell Beckham, Jr. is the best receiver in the NFL

Do you think that is true?

Let's see it for more than seven games before we put him with Demaryius, Calvin, AJ, Brown, Dez, and Julio.

He's doing the same things those guys are doing and more. He's made a case to be included in that elite group. We didn't need to see much to know Calvin, Dez, DT88 etc would be special. Yet they took a few years to develop into stud WRs.

And I dont believe there is a best WR in the league. No one is head and shoulders above the rest.

If you did a complete redraft of NFL WRs, where do you think ODBjr would go? I'd say it would go something like

Calvin
Julio
Dez
DT88
AJ

Would you take Beckham over antonio brown? Jordy? Brandon Marshall or Jeffery? Beckham is right there. I'd say Sammy Watkins is, too.

And why is this thread anchored?

Hard to say more. I agree with you that there is no consensus #1. He is currently playing like a tier 1 WR, but I want to see a longer track record.

That looks about right for next year.

Yup. Watkins is an absolute monster. He is just in a wasteland right now.

No idea.

We are not really disagreeing on that much. I just would like more games before I put him in that top group.

Beckham gets open pretty much every single play.

And yes, he has less competition for balls. But he also has a lot more attention from defensive backs. It goes both ways.

He played an NFL defense that KNEW Manning was going to look for him every single time he dropped back to pass, and he still managed 13 catches and 3 scores.

He has all the ability in the world. He is a supreme talent with the numbers to back it up. I think this outdated idea of "waiting until he proves himself a few more years" is kind of silly, but that's just me.

He's been the best receiver in football the last two months. What's wrong with calling him the best receiver in football right now?

ODB is averaging a pace of would have been THE singular best season Ever for a WR if you translated his average to 16 games. Just his play in 12 games will put him easily top 5 nfl rookie seasons ever.

Because there are a few elite guys that he just is not better than, despite what the stats say.

It's not a perfect parallel, but Russell Westbrook is currently leading the NBA in PER. No one thinks he is the best player in the NBA.

All those guys have over him is the ability to "go get a jump ball."

He's got a skill set and athletic ability equal to those guys, besides that.

And he gets better separation than most of them. He can't rely on his height. In some ways, that makes him a better true receiver.

You know from the fantasy board I was skeptical that he could produce in that situation in NY. But after watching Beckham, he has just been on another level. I agree we need to see more from him, but all signs are pointing to him being a stud

I agree with you.

I just do not think he is on a different level than the other great receivers. I honestly cannot say he is better than the other top six WR's or whatever the number is.

I'd find it really hard to name 5 better than him.

Calvin
AJ
Dez
Julio
DT
Antonio

I take them over OBJ right now. Hes in the top 10 imo

Legit. I agree he's somewhere in the bottom of the Top 10 as a rookie. Pretty impressive.

People are using different methods of grading here. If the question is plain and simple, "is he the best WR in the NFL?", the answer is no. If the question is changed to, "is he the best WR in the NFL right now?" then the answer can reasonably be argued as yes. He's playing the best football of any WR in the league right now. That means absolutely nothing going forward, but not a single poster can say for certainty what his future holds right now. Unless you want to say he is peaking in his rookie year, it's reasonable to bet he can get even better. Teams will have to devote less attention to him next year with Cruz back from injury which can either make it easier for him, or take too many opportunities from him.

Last seven games:

Beckham: 61/866/6 on 82 targets

Brown: 65/779/6 on 85 targets

Jones last seven played (not counting week 15 injury): 49/808/3 on 78 targets

Fairly similar number to Antonio Brown. Again, this is stupid good for a rookie and basically unprecedented for a rookie, but it is hard to call him the best receiver right now when other players are doing the same thing.
